So, what do you do in a situation that threatens you with an inglorious death? How do you avoid the dreadful fate of being devoured by a mimic?
First - you must resolve your mobility issue! After all, it’s far easier for a monster to devour "meat" that can’t move well…
Years of training and the harsh lessons of your mentor have ingrained a vital principle of survival combat into your mind: a lack of mobility spells death.
Moving with all the speed you can muster, your left hand (clutching a scimitar) delivers a powerful, cleaving strike into the vile, writhing flesh of the tentacle that is tightening its grip around your right wrist.
With a wet, squelching sound, the sharp steel severs a chunk of the monstrous flesh…
The severed tip of the tentacle writhes in the air, spraying bile and a foul-smelling, blood-like substance in every direction as it falls toward the filthy floor.
"Kssshhhssshhh!!!" - the mimic lets out an aggressive, piercing hiss, filled with unbridled malice and raw pain.
You attempt a backward somersault to create some distance, intending to bring your shortbow - stowed in your pack along with a quiver of arrows - to bear against the creature.
Alas, while two of the injured tentacles flail about, striking everything in their path, the remaining two launch a ferocious assault.
A sweeping blow from one of the tentacle tips catches you across the face - painful, certainly, but not critical.
However, another tentacle manages to coil around your right lower leg - just as you begin your backward roll.
You fall to the floor, slamming your back and the back of your head against the ground - you nearly lose consciousness…
A moment longer, and you would have been nothing more than a helpless, unconscious victim, doomed to perish within the foul-smelling, razor-toothed maw of the mimic…
Summoning all your strength and pushing through the pain, you continue to fight…
A couple of hacking strikes with your scimitar prove entirely useless, failing to even reach their mark.
This is hardly surprising; attacking with such a weapon while lying on the ground is incredibly awkward.
Your right leg now senses not just a slimy, loathsome tentacle - but also signs of something far worse…
It seems one of your boots has been torn off - and is currently being chewed to pieces by the monster’s needle-sharp teeth!
The next bite could be even more dangerous - the mimic might well sever your leg entirely…
You are on the verge of panic…
Yet, your martial training keeps your spirits up, compelling you to keep fighting.
You are forced to take a desperate, high-stakes gamble…
Contorting your entire body, you hurl your scimitar straight into the monster’s gaping maw…
A scimitar is poorly suited for thrusting - let alone for being thrown.
But luck is on your side: the tip of the blade embeds itself, albeit shallowly, into the upper gum of the creature’s insatiable, monstrous mouth.
The mimic lets out a deafening hiss.
It is in great pain.
But the wound is clearly far from fatal.
Enraged, the mimic thrashes about, its tentacles flailing wildly across the entire room.
In this chaotic movement, one of the tentacles - the very one constricting your right shin - is caught up in the frenzy. As a result, the tentacle (while still refusing to let you go) flings your body into the far corner of the room, leaving you covered in bruises.
Your gaze falls upon something nearby… something small and foul-smelling… it’s… the corpse of a rat!
This small, bloodied scrap of flesh is pinned to the floor by your own steel dagger!
Your right hand - throbbing with pain from the tentacle’s recent assault - reaches out toward the dagger… and a second later, grips it by the hilt!
A swift lunge forward!
The tip of your dagger pierces through the flesh of a tentacle that had coiled around your right lower leg.
A spray of vile, foul-smelling fluid erupts…
New, deafeningly repulsive sounds erupt from the monster’s maw.
In a paroxysm of pain, the wounded tentacle releases your leg…
You seize the brief window of time before the tentacles can lash out and ensnare your body once more.
Springing quickly to your feet, you snatch your ash-wood shortbow from over your shoulder.
With fingers made nimble by years of training, you draw arrows from your quiver, one after another.
A series of swift, precise shots follows.
The arrows fly straight into the monster’s gaping, razor-toothed maw - a maw that had hungered to devour your flesh.
The deadly, razor-sharp steel bites deep…
After a dozen arrows, the mimic’s hissing ceases, and it falls silent.
The tentacles go limp and drop to the floor.
The stench in the room is utterly nauseating.
Though it is dark, you can tell that a pool of the creature’s bile and "blood" is slowly spreading beneath the carcass of the monster you have just slain.
You… have survived.
With a heavy sigh, you gather your weapons.
The dagger…
The scimitar…
Retrieving the ten arrows from the mimic’s gaping maw proves to be the most difficult task - you have a limited supply, only two dozen in your quiver, and it would be foolish to leave ten of them embedded in the foul flesh of the dead creature.
The sharp steel arrowheads are lodged deep; as you pull them free, the revolting stench nearly forces you to retch. The numerous wounds and bruises all over your body are aching…
To make matters worse, your right boot - or rather, the pathetic scraps of leather that used to be your boot—remains inside the monster’s maw…
Ahem… walking around partially barefoot is going to be quite uncomfortable…
And there’s something else…
Perhaps it’s just your imagination…
But deep inside the sharp-toothed maw of the dead mimic, there appeared to be an object - aside from your own arrows…
So, do you attempt to get to the bottom of this by "dissecting" the mimic’s corpse, hoping to retrieve whatever item has likely been stuck in there for a long time?
