dangerous shores
Under the narrow bistro table, the toe of her boot continued its slow ascent. No longer just grazing along my shin, but tracing higher, climbing the inner contour of my thigh with smooth, uncompromising pressure.
My breath caught. My fingers instinctively clamped around the edge of the wrought-iron table.
Then the firm leather cap of her boot made contact dead between my thighs. She didn't strike hard, but the push carried enough calculated force to press directly against the rigid, unnatural contour beneath the dark denim. The silicone offered zero give; the stainless steel rammed with a dull thud against my pubic bone, sending the impact straight into bruised tissue. A sharp jolt of pain radiated through my pelvis.
I flinched, my throat closing up entirely.
Nadja paused. The toe of her boot remained anchored right there—pinned precisely against the iron barricade. Her gaze didn't drop. She kept her eyes locked on mine, but the smile playing across her lips tightened, growing narrower, denser, utterly unreadable.
"Oops," she breathed softly, not drawing her foot back a single millimeter. A velvety mockery edged her features. "What do you have in your pocket, John? A rather massive ring of keys? Or are you just extraordinarily happy to be sitting here with me?"
Blood surged to my temples with scalding heat. My heart battered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Cold sweat broke across my brow. If she reached down now, if she checked with her hand…
"Just… my keys. And a portable charger," I forced out, willing my lips into a shallow, desperate smile while gritting my teeth. "The pockets on these jeans are pretty slim-cut."
"Mhm… so it seems," she murmured, tilting her head before sliding her foot back agonizingly slowly—so slowly the leather heel dragged audibly across the rigid cylinder.
Taking a sip of her tea, she set the glass down and propped her elbows on the tabletop. Her sea-blue eyes bored into mine with piercing curiosity.
"Speaking of keys…," she began casually, her tone turning faintly reflective. "Tell me, how are things actually between you two in the flat? You and Loona… you have a remarkably peculiar dynamic, you know that?"
My stomach twisted into a knot. "What do you mean?"
"Well," Nadja continued, tucking a stray strand behind her ear as she studied my face. "You're stepsiblings, obviously. But the way she dictates things… the way she looks at you sometimes. She keeps you on a remarkably short leash, John. One gets the feeling you can't take a single step without clearing it with her first. Even today… I'm willing to bet you checked your watch right down to the minute before stepping out the door, didn't you?"
Every single word felt like a surgical needle driving into an open wound. Shame and terror collided in a vicious vice, threatening to shatter what little composure I had left. She knew nothing of the padlock, nothing of the black ribbon beneath Loona’s pillow—and yet she struck the bruised truth with unerring accuracy.
"She… she just looks out for me," I deflected in a raspy voice, fingers clawing at the rim of the table. "We've known each other a long time. She's a control freak, that's all."
"Clearly," Nadja said under her breath. A daring spark flared in her eyes. Standing up smoothly, she threw the strap of her small leather bag over her shoulder and circled the table until she stood right beside me.
She leaned down, her perfume of vanilla and damp autumn air enveloping me completely.
"It's getting too chilly out here for me," she whispered close to my ear, her hand trailing down from my shoulder to rest flat against my chest. "Let's head back to my place in Prenzlauer Berg. We'll share a glass of wine, you can take a look at the cameras… and we'll simply see just how far that famous self-control of yours really extends."
A cold terror sliced through me, chased immediately by a suffocating wave of illicit craving.
*Her apartment.* Loona’s instructions echoed with absolute severity through my skull: *Entering her flat is strictly forbidden. You stay outside. You come straight home.* If I went with her, if I crossed that threshold, Loona would tear me apart. But shooting Nadja down cold, rejecting her invitation abruptly, would demolish the carefully constructed mask of a normal guy.
I rose slowly from the iron chair, my legs stiff, the steel biting deeper into my flesh with every shifting angle. I stood directly before her, barely a handbreadth separating our bodies.
"Nadja…," I began quietly, my eyes pinned to her mouth. "I… I can't come up to your place tonight."
She arched an eyebrow, an amused trace of mock disappointment coloring her features. "Really? Is your curfew expiring already?"
"No," I murmured, taking a half-step forward to erase the remaining distance between us. My heart was pounding so loud it drowned out the lapping water of the canal. "But if I come home with you tonight… I might actually lose control. And I want to make sure you know exactly what you're getting yourself into."
Nadja froze, the air catching audibly in her throat. The response seemed to catch her entirely off guard. A soft, disbelieving smile touched her lips, while her hand glided up from my shoulder to cup my jaw. Her fingers were silky, warm, and seared against my skin.
"You really are impossible, John," she breathed.
She pulled me gently downward, and her lips found mine.
At first, the contact was soft and inquiring, carried by the taste of fresh mint and the cold edge of the evening. But the spark caught instantly. Nadja didn't settle for a polite, fleeting touch. She stepped right into my personal space, her lips parting demandingly, her tongue slipping past mine with fluid, urgent heat.
A dull haze overtook my senses. My hands, which I had fought so hard to keep pinned at my sides, acted against every grain of reason: my fingers found her waist, digging into the knit fabric of her cardigan, feeling the slender, warm line of her body beneath. She met the gesture instantly, looping both arms tightly around the back of my neck and pressing her entire torso flush against mine.
Her chest flattened against my shirt; her scent clouded every remaining thought. She kissed me deeper, hungrier, breathless, her fingers tangling into the short hair at the nape of my neck, teasing the skin at my hairline.
Then the dynamic shifted dangerously.
What began as a heated embrace turned into an exploratory, uninhibited search. Nadja pulled one hand from my neck, letting it drag down my shoulder, down my chest, tracing the seam of the shirt buttons straight to the waistband of my dark jeans.
My entire body locked into rigid stone.
She didn't read the paralysis as a warning; she took it for pure, suspended lust. Her fingers moved lower. Gripping my hip, she pulled my pelvis toward hers with firm intent, and in the exact same motion, her flat palm drifted downward—sliding directly over the taut denim covering the fly.
*Naked horror crashed over me like an icy wave.*
The cage. The padlock. The freezing, immovable cylinder that offered zero give.
Her palm was already brushing the upper rise of the fly, her fingertips searching on instinct for the yielding, swelling heat of an ordinary body—only to collide dead against the curved steel bars and the solid brass shackle of the padlock pressing boldly against the cloth.
Under the sudden pressure, the base ring drove with brutal force into my pubic bone. Trapped inside the cylinder, spurred by her mouth and her scent, the flesh tried frantically to expand, only to be crushed against the steel walls. A strangled, agonizing gasp broke in my throat, swallowed directly into her mouth.
*She feels it. She knows that's not flesh. She knows there is a lock.*
Shame detonated in my mind. In a split second, I saw the facade collapse: her recoil in disgust, staring at me, laughing at me, leaving me exposed on the Maybachufer pavement like a freak. The nightmare from the stalls with Emma—the public humiliation—threatened to become reality all over again.
Pure panic flooded my system with adrenaline.
Tearing my mouth away from hers, I seized her wrist—firm enough to yank her hand away from my crotch, yet trying desperately not to seem violent—and stumbled a step backward onto the damp cobblestones. My chest heaved in ragged, violent spasms. Breath whistled hot through my teeth.
"Nadja… wait. Not out here," I choked out, my voice cracking and strained. My knees shook so violently I had to grab the back of the bistro chair to keep from falling.
Nadja stood there, her lips parted and slick from the kiss, a stray lock of hair resting across her forehead. Her sea-blue eyes were blown wide by the sudden break. For a fraction of a second, her gaze dropped directly to my crotch, right where her palm had been pressed against the cold metal, before drifting back up to my bloodless face.
A strange, quiet glimmer crossed her expression—a blend of surprise, intense fascination, and an elusive, knowing spark that my panicked mind couldn't begin to untangle.
She didn't wrench her wrist away; she simply let her fingers fall slack, a thin, loaded smile curling the corners of her mouth.
"Quite wound up, aren't we?" she whispered smoothly, brushing the hair from her face, measuring me with an appraisal that made my blood run cold. "You're completely out of breath, John. And your heart is beating like you're about to pass out."
"I… I told you… that I need to keep myself in check," I forced out through clenched teeth, averting my gaze slightly as I buried my trembling hands deep into my jacket pockets. Beneath the denim, the bruised tissue throbbed like an open burn.
Nadja took a half-step forward, tilting her head, and drew her index finger softly down my cheek—a touch so light it momentarily stunned the panic.
"It's fine," she murmured with quiet amusement. "Wouldn't want you collapsing on the canal path."
She zipped her bag, slung the strap over her shoulder, and took a step backward into the warm pool of the streetlamp.
"Just remember one thing, John," she whispered, her smile cutting straight through to the bone. "You won't get off that easily next time. Go on home. Before that self-control of yours blows up completely."
Turning on her heel, she walked off into the darkness toward Schönleinstraße station with light, measured strides.
I was left standing by the iron railing, trembling, the autumn wind biting through my open collar while the stainless steel hammered mercilessly against my pelvis. I had stopped her hand at the final second—yet I knew with sickening certainty that her palm had registered exactly what was locked away beneath the cloth.
