Complicated doesn’t have to be a bad thing

The next two hours on the sofa stretched out like thick, amber syrup.

The drinks ran low, the bass from the speakers sank deeper into the upholstery, and the conversations drifted into that smoky, unfiltered late-night murmur. Loona and Timo had drawn close together. She sat angled back against his broad chest, laughing at his rough jokes, trailing a hand casually over his thigh, and letting him refill her glass. She played the part of the coveted woman with an elegance that drove me completely out of my mind. Every time Timo dug his fingers into her waist or pressed his lips to her neck, my throat constricted—yet not out of jealousy. It was pure, breathless fascination. I adored her. She was breathtaking in her casual, almost untouchable composure. The fact that she was leading this arrogant guy by the nose right in front of me, that she would soon use his body as a mere instrument while I was the only one in the room who understood the real foundation behind it all, filled me with a dizzying, submissive pride. I was her cuckold, her loyal shadow, and I cherished every second of it.

At the same time, an entirely different fire was smoldering right beside me.

Nadja had shifted closer. Her bare shoulder brushed mine, her legs were tucked up on the sofa, and with every remark she tossed me a smile that was far too warm, far too intimate for a casual acquaintance. She laughed at my quiet comments, touched my knee offhandedly during the conversation, and looked at me with those dark, sparkling eyes in a way that sent my pulse plummeting into freefall. She was gorgeous—worldly, sharp-witted, seductive. Every instinct in me screamed to turn fully toward her, take her hand, and lean into the flirtation.

And right there, the bittersweet, illicit reality took hold: I couldn't.

Beneath the soft fabric of my trousers sat the iron ring, the padlock, the cool silicone. My entire sexuality, every spark of male potency, was no longer mine to command. It belonged to Loona. I was not permitted to touch Nadja, not allowed to take things further, unable to initiate anything at all—unless Loona should one day graciously grant permission and turn that tiny key in the lock. That certainty stole the breath from my lungs. The sheer impossibility of exchanging anything more than harmless words with this stunning woman on the couch, purely because my body was the absolute property of the woman seated across the room, pushed me into a state of almost ecstatic desperation. I had to take agonizing care that my knees didn't press too firmly against Nadja’s legs, that she wouldn't feel the rigid contour of the casing against her thigh. That constant tightrope walk—the ache for her proximity and the frantic, intoxicating dread of exposure—drove me out of my mind in the best possible way.

Shortly after two, Loona set her empty glass down with a soft, bright click against the glass top of the coffee table.

The movement was as casual as it was final. The room seemed to fall quiet all at once, even though the music kept playing.

Loona stood up, smoothed down her short lounge shorts, and looked at Timo. Her eyes were dark, heavy with alcohol and open invitation.

"I've had enough out here," she said softly, her voice velvety and low. "Coming through to the back, Timo?"

Timo stared at her as though he'd hit the jackpot. His broad, self-satisfied grin returned; he set his glass down hastily and scrambled off the sofa. "Don't have to ask me twice."

Before turning away, Loona’s gaze drifted toward me.

Pausing in the middle of the room, she stepped up to the couch and leaned down. Her scent—almonds, gin, and her warm, familiar skin—enveloped me like a heavy blanket. Right before Nadja’s eyes and those of the impatiently waiting Timo, she laid two fingers gently against my cheek, traced my jawline, and pressed a tender, entirely peaceful kiss to my temple.

"Be nice to Nadja, John," she whispered close to my ear, low enough that the words dissolved into the beat of the music. "And remember our promise."

A scalding chill raced down my spine. The trapped flesh surged with all its might against the cushioning silicone, pulsing dull and demanding.

Loona straightened up, gave Nadja a brief, knowing nod, and vanished down the hallway with fluid strides. Timo tossed me a quick, conspiratorial wink, clapped my shoulder hard, and hurried after her.

A few seconds later, the heavy bedroom door fell shut with a dull, solid click.

Silence. Only the bass.

I sat frozen on the cushions, hands clutching my glass with clammy fingers, while beside me Nadja curled her legs into a slightly more comfortable position, studying me from the side as a quiet, amused smile bloomed on her lips. From down the hall came the first faint creak of the bedsprings.

The timber of the old floorboards seemed to channel the vibrations straight into my bones. From down the corridor drifted the rhythmic, heavy thumping of the bedframe against the wall, accompanied by Timo’s raw, guttural groans and the lighter, almost melodic sighs from Loona.

Every single sound burned like hot wax against my nerves. My breathing grew shallow; the flesh beneath my sweatpants hammered with ruthless force against the stainless-steel shell. The soft silicone blunted the sharpest edges, yet the unyielding constriction tightened like a vise around my throat—a suffocating, unraveling mix of submission, envy, and unbridled arousal. She was actually doing it. She was letting him take her right behind that thin wooden door, and I sat out here, secured, sealed, and completely rendered helpless.

"Didn't waste much time, did he?" Nadja murmured softly.

Her voice cut through the heavy air with such quiet ease that I flinched. She had set her glass on the table and turned fully toward me. She had pulled one leg onto the cushion, her knee resting barely an inch from my thigh. She wore that delicate, amused smile—the expression of a striking woman enjoying the late hour and taking things as they came.

"Timo has… always been pretty direct," I managed with effort. My voice sounded far too raspy, far too thick, and I cleared my throat quickly to keep the facade from crumbling.

Nadja laughed softly, a warm, smoky chuckle. She studied my profile while next door the bed let out a particularly loud groan, followed by the wet slap of skin on skin. My heart battered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"And what about you?" she asked quietly, tilting her head to look at me with dark eyes that glinted in the half-light. "Are you always this unbothered, John? I mean… most guys would lose their minds if their stepsister just hauled their best mate into the next room to tear the place down. Isn't that… a bit strange to sit and listen to?"

Heat surged right to the roots of my hair. The double meaning in her words was breathtakingly dangerous. To her, I was merely the stepbrother supposed to sit by looking cool while enduring his stepsister's casual flings with their mutual friend. On the surface, she didn't know—or wasn't supposed to know—what truly transpired between Loona and me, or that my body no longer belonged to me in the slightest.

"We… we give each other our space," I lied, my fingers white-knuckling the condensation on the crystal glass. "Loona is an adult. She takes what she wants. And I… I don't have a problem with it."

"Really?" Nadja murmured.

She shifted another inch closer. Her bare shoulder brushed my upper arm, the fine silk of her top rustling faintly, and her perfume—that rich, floral, slightly tart scent—completely clouded my senses. Slowly, she extended her hand and laid her fingers against my forearm. Her skin was cool, her touch light yet demanding all at once.

"That makes you quite rare, you know that?" she whispered, her eyes drifting from my gaze down to my lips. "Most men in a flatshare dynamic like this would be completely uptight or jealous of their mate. But you're just sitting here, perfectly composed, looking damn good doing it."

My pulse detonated. Every fiber of my being screamed to turn toward her, slide a hand behind her neck, and kiss that impossibly tempting mouth. She was offering it on a silver platter. A gorgeous woman, alone with me on the sofa, while down the hall my stepsister Loona’s moans grew louder and increasingly uninhibited.

Yet the instant I shifted slightly, the rigid metal housing struck hard against the fabric of my trousers.

The iron reality hauled me back with brutal clarity: I was locked away. The key rested with the woman in the bedroom arching beneath Timo. I was forbidden. Even if I wanted to, even if Nadja stripped me bare right now—she would hit a padlock. My sexuality had been confiscated. I was Loona’s property, her little locked cuckold, permitted to breathe only on her terms.

And the most perverted part was: it made me so unimaginably aroused that my vision blurred at the edges. Knowing Nadja desired me, yet being able to touch her only if Loona granted permission one day, drove me straight to the brink of madness.

Very carefully, almost imperceptibly, I drew my knee back a couple of inches purely to prevent her from feeling the rigid cylinder through the cloth.

"Thanks, Nadja," I whispered with a trembling voice, holding her gaze while my palms grew slick with sweat. "But… some things are more complicated than they seem."

A knowing, almost predatory gleam flashed in Nadja’s eyes. She didn't withdraw her hand; instead, she traced her fingertips slowly down my arm to my wrist.

"Complicated doesn't have to mean bad," she breathed, just as a ragged cry from Loona pierced through the timber down the hall, followed by a low, spent groan from Timo. "Sometimes the complicated things are the ones that end up being the most fun… don't you think, John?"

Nadja’s thumb traced agonizingly slow circles over the sensitive inside of my wrist. Her breath smelled of sweet gin and mint, and for two seconds she closed her eyes, as if deliberately tuning in to the cadence punishing the bedsprings in the back room.

"He's certainly putting the work in," she whispered with a low, faintly mocking chuckle, opening her eyes to bore her gaze deep into mine. "Tell me honestly, though, John… do you always let yourself get sidelined so easily? A good-looking guy like you, sitting alone on the couch while everyone else gets what they want… It almost makes it look like you enjoy just watching. Or just listening."

The words struck like electric shocks. Waves of hot and cold crashed over me. Did she truly believe that, or was she testing the waters around the real truth? Beneath my trousers, the steel rebelled. Every pulse drove trapped flesh against the smooth barrier, the silicone dug into raw skin, and I had to claw my free hand deep into the sofa cushion just to swallow back a ragged gasp.

"I… I just know when to stay out of the way," I forced out.

"Such a good boy," she murmured, leaning in a fraction further so the tips of her dark hair brushed across my forearm. "Almost unnervingly well-behaved."

Right at that second, a drawn-out, high-pitched cry from Loona shattered the dense silence of the hallway—a sound of absolute, unbridled release that was immediately smothered by a low, rattling growl from Timo. A final, heavy strike of the bedframe against the baseboard reverberated through the wall. Then: abrupt silence.

Nothing remained except the heavy, muffled panting of two spent bodies filtering through the wood.

Nadja paused. A knowing, amused smile spread across her features. Sliding her hand from my wrist, she gave my thigh two light, casual pats—her palm brushing mere inches from the rigid cylinder—and reached for her glass on the table.

"Looks like the curtain's down," she said smoothly, polishing off the final sip.

Not two minutes passed before the bedroom latch clicked downward.

Timo shuffled out into the hallway. He wore only his faded jeans, barefoot, a fine sheen of sweat glistening across his chest, his face flushed deep red. His mouth carried that insufferably wide, greasy smirk of a man convinced he had just conquered the world.

Ambling into the living room, he braced one hand against the doorframe, regarding the two of us with heavy, sluggish eyes.

"Man, you guys…," he rasped, scratching his stomach and letting out a tired chuckle. "I am officially done for. If I don't lie down right now, I'm dropping dead on the rug."

"Big mouth, zero stamina, huh?" Nadja teased from the couch, entirely unfazed, stretching her legs out before her.

"Trust me, the stamina did the job," Timo grinned dirtily, looking over at me. He delivered a heavy, solid slap to my shoulder. "Bedroom's all yours again. I'm crashing on the study couch… do not wake me before noon."

Turning on his heel, he plodded back down the hall, and moments later the study door clicked shut.

A heavy, almost tangible hush settled over the flat.

Nadja set her glass down, stifling a small yawn behind her hand as she gave me an inscrutable look. "I think that's my cue, too. Half past two… I'll call an Uber."

She stood up, smoothed down her silk camisole, and headed toward the coat rack. I rose mechanically, following her into the hall to help her into her leather jacket. The metal against my body had grown searingly hot, the pressure in my pelvis bordering on unbearable.

Turning back at the front door, she rested both hands flat against my chest, looked squarely into my eyes, and pressed a kiss to my cheek—slow, deliberate, her lips lingering a heartbeat too long against my skin.

"Fascinating evening with you, John," she breathed into my ear. "Sleep well."

The door clicked shut.

I stood alone in the dim corridor, trembling, turning the deadbolt in the lock.

At the far end of the hall, the bedroom door stood slightly ajar. A slender band of amber light cut across the floorboards.

"John," Loona’s voice drifted from the room. It sounded raspy, low, thoroughly exhausted, yet carrying an absolute, sovereign command. "Come inside. And lock the door behind you."
