At the cafeteria

The group of friends plopped down at a table at the hospital cafeteria after paying for their food. Everyone was quiet as they didn't know how to react to confront the situation at hand. Everyone kept stealing glances at Chloe to see how she is doing. All they saw was a tear streaked face looking down intensely at the food on her plate. Ashley moved her chair next to Chloe and tried her best to comfort her. Chloe laid her head on her shoulder but did nothing else. Nobody can seem to get Chloe to talk. It was Gavin who broke the silence.

"What happened to Shawn?" he asked.

Chloe turned away as Gavin winced at his question.

"I heard he injured his leg in the crash and tried to crawl away. Some witnesses thankfully saw what happened and stopped Shawn from escaping. They held him down until the police arrived. The last thing I heard was he could get some serious jail time." replied Heather.

"that's...good...I...guess..." Chloe quietly said. Her head was still turned away from the friends and she was intent on staring at the clock across the room.

Ashley smiled about the fact that Chloe is finally talking.

Chloe looked down at her food and started eating. She made sure to not make eye contact with anyone. She was afraid for breaking down into tears if she looked at anyone. She listened to the sounds of forks and plates clinking within the cafeteria. The voices of other people angered her. "They have someone that loves them or talk to them and I don't have that privilege." she thought.

The friends did not know what to do and no one did anything to stop the awkwardness. Everyone started to eat their food and no words were spoken.
