Chapter 4: You've Got Potential

Chapter 3 by ErosApostasia ErosApostasia

Continued from chapter 2:

When the bell above the door chimes, she doesn't look up immediately. She waits, counting to three, letting the silence build tension. Only then does she slowly straighten her spine and turn her head, her ice-gray eyes fixing on me with a look of pure disdain.

"Back so soon?"

Her voice is clipped, laced with mockery, but there's a flicker of something else beneath it—an irritation she refuses to name.

"If you're here to flirt, save your breath. I don't do romance. I don't do games. But I suppose I could make time for a lecture on how to properly stock a pantry."

"Nope," I say. "Just getting groceries."

I move through the store, selecting items with deliberate slowness, aware of her watching me. When I reach the counter to pay, I place a gift-wrapped box in front of her. Inside is a shiny, polished ebony flat-back hairbrush and a pair of satin and lace-trimmed women's briefs. The note tucked inside reads: "For me to wear, for you to spank me with. Call me." My phone number is printed at the bottom.

Chapter 3:

The moment the box touches the counter, Eve stiffens. Her gaze narrows, calculating. This isn't a gift—it's an ambush. A provocation. A calculated move in some game she clearly thinks I don't understand.

She sets down her clipboard with deliberate precision and studies the package like it might bite. With a flick of her wrist, she rips off the wrapping. The brush comes free first—polished, heavy, elegant. She turns it over once, then tosses it aside without another glance.

The second item makes her pause. Briefs. Satin. Lace. A note attached. She reads it once. Twice. Her lips curl into something between a sneer and a grimace.

"You think you're clever," she mutters under her breath, her voice low and venomous. "You think this flatters me."

She grabs the box and hurls it into the trash bin behind the counter, where it clatters noisily against other discarded items. Without looking up, she barks:

"Next time you want to play games, bring something useful. Not toys. Not fantasies. I don't have time for your little schoolboy antics."

Her eyes meet mine through the window as I walk away.

"You've got potential," she calls out, almost to herself.

I pause at the door and turn back.

"I'll wear them," I say, "if that's what you want."

I pantomime holding a phone to my ear, mouthing for her to call me, then I leave.

She freezes. The sheer audacity of the statement hangs in the stagnant air of the store. For a heartbeat, her composure cracks, revealing a flash of genuine, unadulterated shock. Then the mask slams back down, heavier and darker than before.

"Wear them? You'd look absolutely ridiculous."

She snarls, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, guttural tone. She leans over the counter, her small frame radiating a sudden, terrifying intensity.

"And don't you dare pretend you know what I want. You don't know a damn thing about me."

As I mime the phone again, she lets out a sharp, derisive bark of laughter that sounds more like a weaponized hiss.

"Don't hold your breath."

Three days pass.

The afternoon light is softer now, filtered through the storefront windows and dimmed by the dust motes that dance in the air. Eve stands near the register, organizing the small items displayed there—lip balms, mints, receipts—when the bell above the door chimes again. She doesn't look up.

"Eve," a woman's voice calls out, causing Eve to jump and blush furiously.

Karen Horning, the assistant manager, approaches with a curious expression on her plump, middle-aged face. She's around Eve's age, with sharp eyes that miss nothing.

"Why do you have a hairbrush and a pair of women's panties at work?"

Karen holds up the items she's just pulled from the trash bin, her eyebrows raised in genuine confusion.

The color drains from Eve's face before rushing back in a hot, humiliating wave that stains her cheeks a deep crimson. She snaps upright, her hands flying to the edge of the counter as if to steady herself from a blow. Her eyes dart wildly to the trash bin, then back to Karen, which only serves to confirm her guilt.

"It's none of your business, Karen!" Eve snaps, her voice cracking slightly before she forces it back into its usual icy monotone. She tries to smooth her apron, her movements jerky and uncoordinated. "Some idiot left a box of junk on my counter. I was simply... disposing of it. Efficiently."

She glares at the trash bin as if wishing she could command the contents to vanish. The lie hangs in the air between them like a foul odor.

"What did that man mean when he said, 'I'll wear them'?" Karen asks in her nosy Midwestern accent, her eyes bright with curiosity.

Eve's jaw locks so tightly it looks painful. She can feel Karen's inquisitive gaze burning into the side of her head, and the humiliation is almost physical. She turns on her heel, rounding the corner of the counter to confront Karen directly, her posture rigid and defensive.

"He meant nothing!" Eve lies, her voice rising in pitch, betraying her agitation. "He was babbling like a lunatic, just like most men do when they realize they're being ignored."

She points a trembling finger toward the automatic doors.

"He was leaving a pile of rubbish and talking nonsense. If you spend half as much time checking the expiration dates on the dairy as you do eavesdropping on my conversations, maybe we wouldn't be losing money on spoiled milk."

She turns back to the empty store, her chest heaving slightly.

"Well, I never," Karen says in a huff, her hands planted firmly on her hips. "If you weren't my age and we weren't at work, I'd turn you over my knee and show you how we used a hairbrush in my house."
