A New Face

Chapter 16 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

I came down the stairs still feeling the residual stretch and the low, secret throb between my legs, the three black shapes left deliberately on the nightstand like a promise I had already started keeping.

Voices drifted from the upstairs hallway I had just left.

Violet’s first - quiet, wary, the same flat tone she had used since we moved in.

Then a boy’s voice. Soft. Careful. Almost gentle.

I stopped on the landing and looked back.

Violet stood near her bedroom door, arms folded tight across her chest, shoulders curved inward the way she did when she was trying to take up less space. Across from her leaned a tall, dark-haired boy I had never seen before. Pale. Intense. Wearing a dark hoodie that looked lived-in. He kept a respectful distance, hands in his pockets, head tilted as he listened to whatever she was saying in that low, unhappy murmur.

Tate, I would learn later. But in that moment he was simply a stranger in my house, standing too comfortably in the hallway as if he belonged there the same way Moira had.

Violet glanced up and caught me watching. Something flickered across her face - guilt, defiance, exhaustion - before she looked away again.

“Mom,” she said, not quite meeting my eyes. “This is… Tate. From school. He was just helping me with something.”

The boy straightened and offered a polite, almost old-fashioned nod. “Mrs. Harmon. Sorry to drop by unannounced. Violet said it was okay.”

Ben’s voice floated up from downstairs, still talking to Moira about the living-room dusting. Ordinary. Blind.

I studied the two of them. Violet looked smaller than usual, the house already pressing on her the way it pressed on me. The boy’s gaze was steady, too knowing for an ordinary classmate. The air around them felt slightly charged, the same subtle thickness I had started recognizing whenever the house paid attention.

“How did you get in?” I asked.

Tate’s mouth curved in a small, careful smile. “Side door was unlocked. I knocked first. Violet heard me.”

Violet shifted her weight. “We’re just talking, Mom. It’s fine.”

The residual heat between my legs and the memory of what I had just done in the locked bedroom made the entire exchange feel unreal - my daughter in the hallway with a strange boy while black silicone still glistened on my nightstand and a maid who shouldn’t exist vacuumed downstairs.

I nodded once, slow.

“Five minutes,” I said. “Then I want him gone. And the side door stays locked from now on.”

Violet’s jaw tightened, but she didn’t argue. Tate gave another polite nod, already stepping back as if he understood the boundary even if the house itself did not.

I turned and continued down the stairs, the low throb still pulsing, the taste of the morning’s secrets thick on my tongue.

Behind me their voices resumed - quiet, private, the boy’s low and steady, Violet’s gradually less flat.
