Confront Ben on whether he was aware
I came down the last of the stairs with the residual throb still low in my body and the image of that pale, dark-haired boy standing too comfortably in my hallway burned into the front of my mind.
Ben was in the living room, pointing something out to Moira near the fireplace. She held her duster loosely, head tilted in that attentive way she had perfected, the short black dress still looking like it belonged more to a fantasy than to housework. When I stepped into the doorway both of them looked up.
“Ben,” I said, voice flat. “There’s a boy upstairs with Violet. In the hallway. Tate, he called himself. From her school. He was already inside when I found them. Side door unlocked, according to him.”
Ben’s expression flickered - surprise first, then the familiar careful concern. “I didn’t let anyone in. I’ve been down here with Moira the whole time.”
Moira’s eyes moved between us, polite interest masking something sharper. She didn’t step away. She simply continued dusting the edge of the mantel as if the conversation were background noise she was entitled to hear.
“He said the side door was unlocked,” I repeated. “And Violet treated it like it was normal. Like he’d been here before. Did you know about this? Has he been coming over?”
Ben shook his head immediately. “No. I’ve never met him. Violet hasn’t mentioned any Tate. She’s barely spoken to either of us since we moved in.” He glanced toward the stairs, already shifting into problem-solving mode. “I’ll go up and talk to him. Make sure he leaves.”
“That’s not the only issue.” I kept my eyes on him, ignoring the way Moira’s hand slowed on the wood. “A stranger is in our house. A teenage boy. With our daughter. And somehow the door was open. You’re telling me you knew nothing?”
“I knew nothing,” Ben said, firmer now. “Viv, I wouldn’t keep something like that from you. We’re both trying to keep this family together. I wouldn’t hide a boy coming around.”
Moira’s voice slid in, smooth and helpful. “I haven’t seen any young man here during my previous visits either, Mrs. Harmon. The side door was locked when I arrived this morning. I always check.”
Previous visits. The ones Ben insisted had been happening for days while I remained somehow unaware.
I looked at her. She met my gaze without flinching, the picture of a conscientious housekeeper overhearing a private marital concern and offering what she could.
Ben ran a hand through his hair. “I’ll handle it. Right now. He leaves, the doors get checked, and we’ll talk to Violet about not letting people in without telling us.”
He moved past me toward the stairs. I didn’t stop him. The low ache between my legs and the memory of the black silicone still waiting upstairs made the entire exchange feel slightly unreal, as if the house had arranged the boy, the unlocked door, and Moira’s convenient presence all at once.
Moira watched Ben go, then turned her attention back to me. Her voice dropped just enough that it wouldn’t carry up the stairs.
“Teenagers can be secretive, Mrs. Harmon. Especially in a new place. If you’d like, I can keep an eye on the side door while I’m here. Make sure it stays locked.”
The offer sounded reasonable. It felt like another thread the house was winding around us.
I didn’t answer her. I simply stood in the living-room doorway listening to Ben’s footsteps reach the upstairs hallway and the low murmur of voices that followed - his, Violet’s, the boy’s - while Moira resumed her dusting with quiet, proprietary care.
