Desires on the Tokyo Express
Desires on the Tokyo Express
The jolt of the plane’s wheels hitting the tarmac slammed through my body, wrenching me from a deep, disorienting sleep. Tokyo. The word pulsed in my foggy mind as I blinked at the darkness outside the window, a blur of runway lights. The next hour was a humid, exhausting blur of bodies and baggage carousels, the air thick with sweat and impatience. Black in Tokyo, the locals ignore you, they think you don't have money, your a ghost in the crowd. By the time I finally collapsed into the back of a taxi, my own scent mingling with the cab’s faint lemon disinfectant, I was running on pure, frayed adrenaline.
The city was a sensory assault. Neon bled across the window, painting my tired face in flashes of electric blue and violent pink. Skyscrapers, plastered with giant anime eyes and pouting J-pop idols, pierced the night. And the people—a river of stylish, purposeful energy that both overwhelmed and electrified me. This was Shinjuku. My gaze, hungry and jet-lagged, caught on the glittering side streets of Kabukicho: women in sparkling dresses under garish signs for ‘The Sky High Club,’ their laughter sharp and inviting. A deep, restless ache, ignored for weeks, stirred low in my belly. Soon, I thought, before the motion of the car finally pulled me under.
I woke to quiet. A residential street, a polite porter, a small, immaculate apartment. I performed the rituals of arrival on autopilot: shoes off, toes pointing out, a quick shower to slough off the travel grime. The platform bed was firm, the black duvet cool. I fell into a sleep so deep it felt like drowning.
