Chapter 9: The Big Misunderstanding

When my eyes landed on Sierra sitting at her desk—completely unhurt—a massive weight lifted off my chest, and I let out a long, ragged breath.

Before she could say a word, I sprinted toward her.

"Sis!"

I hadn't even covered half the distance when a massive, towering shadow suddenly stepped into the aisle, blocking my path entirely.

My body reacted before my brain even had time to process what was happening.

In that split second, the muscle memory of the Aurelian Defensive Kata—the elite, kinetic-redirection martial art I had fused from Chloe—triggered on pure instinct. I didn't think; my limbs moved in a flawless, fluid motion.

I grabbed the giant student's sleeve, planted my heel firmly behind his ankle, and redirected his forward momentum with a sharp, leveraged twist of my hips.

The massive student instantly lost his balance and went airborne, sailing sideways through the air.

CRASH!

Because the classroom aisle was narrow, his heavy landing shattered two entire rows of wooden desks, sending books, papers, and shattered wood flying across the floor.

The entire classroom went dead silent.

Everyone stood frozen, their mouths agape in total, unadulterated shock.

This guy was Greg—Bellevue High’s star offensive lineman. He stood over six-foot-three and weighed a staggering three hundred and twenty pounds. He was a literal mountain of a teenager.

Yet in my hands, a guy of average build, he had been flipped through the air like a ragdoll in less than a second.

Sierra had clearly recognized me by then. She tried to yell out, but the entire encounter had happened so fast that her voice caught in her throat.

"Sis! Are you okay? Who touched you?!" I roared, rushing to her side and glaring at the surrounding crowd like a mad dog ready to tear apart anyone she pointed at.

"Sis?!"

The entire classroom chorused the word in absolute bewilderment.

Sierra’s face instantly flushed a brilliant, burning crimson. She lunged forward, grabbing my jacket sleeve with her small, trembling hands.

"Zach! You... you hit the wrong people! They're my classmates! They came here to protect me!"

"Wait... what?"

I froze mid-stride.

I looked around at the dozen students surrounding us, all of whom were staring at me with a mixture of profound terror and total confusion.

I stood there completely frozen, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of my neck as I wished the floor would open up and swallow me whole.

Holy hell. After all that dramatic entry... it was a complete misunderstanding?!

Realizing that I wasn't some random lunatic out to murder them, the students let out a collective, breathless sigh of relief.

They might have had numbers on their side, but what I had just demonstrated had completely shattered their spirits. Even the toughest athletes in Bellevue High wouldn't have survived a single second against that fluid, terrifying throw. For ordinary students to come at a guy who could flip a three-hundred-pound lineman with one arm would have been pure suicide.

I was instantly consumed by guilt. I was just about to step over the broken desks to apologize to Greg and the guy behind the door when the faculty monitors finally burst into the room.

All three teachers were gripping heavy police batons, their faces grim.

When they saw the shattered desks and the two students groaning on the floor, their expressions turned completely severe. To them, I was clearly a dangerous criminal who had broken onto campus to assault their students.

The lead monitor raised his baton, shouting authoritatively, "Stay right where you are! Put your hands up! What do you think you're doing?!"

Looking at their tense, aggressive postures, I couldn't help but let out a bitter, awkward chuckle.

Fearing that I might end up in a physical altercation with the faculty, Sierra immediately stepped in front of me, rapidly explaining the entire situation. The other classmates quickly piped up from the sides, confirming every word.

If it had been any other student making excuses, the monitors would never have bought it. But Sierra was Bellevue’s prized valedictorian candidate, and every teacher on campus respected her.

Once they realized the entire chaotic brawl was just a massive, protective misunderstanding, they gave me a harsh, stern lecture on campus safety before finally lowering their batons and escorting themselves out.

With the teachers gone, the classroom mood relaxed completely.

I walked over and sincerely apologized to Greg and the student behind the door, helping them pull the broken desks back upright. To my surprise, both of them were thoroughly awestruck by my martial arts throw. Once they learned I was Sierra’s younger brother who had rushed over out of sheer panic for her safety, they laughed it off and readily accepted my apology.

Once the dust settled, I turned to Sierra, my expression turning serious. "Sis, what actually happened here today? Why were you crying?"

The moment the question was asked, the atmosphere among her classmates turned grim.

As Sierra quietly explained the truth, a dark, icy fury flared up in my chest once again.

It turned out that Bellevue High had a notorious local bully named Ethan Drake—a wealthy, aggressive senior who led a ruthless gang of off-campus troublemakers.

Ethan had taken an obsession to Sierra, pestering her constantly for weeks. But Sierra had repeatedly shot him down.

Today, after hearing rumors that Sierra was staying at my house over the weekend, Ethan had lost his mind in a jealous rage. He had cornered her during lunch, aggressively demanding that she cancel her plans and go out on a date with him tonight.

Sierra had flatly refused. But Ethan was infamous for his dangerous ties to local street gangs and the city's criminal underworld. He had threatened that if she tried to leave campus without him, his boys would intercept her outside the gates. Terrified, Sierra had locked herself in the classroom, and her brave classmates had stayed behind after hours to shield her from Ethan's gang.

Hearing Ethan Drake’s name, my fists clenched so hard my knuckles popped.

If this punk thought he could use gang threats to intimidate my family, he was about to learn a very hard lesson about who he was messing with.
