Hard facts
The seventh period dragged on like thick tar.
I sat in the second-to-last row of the stuffy classroom, staring blankly at the chalkboard where Mr. Lindner was jotting down formulas for the basic physics course. Not a single word actually registered. The exhaustion from a sleepless night burned like sand in my eyes, and my head pounded. But far worse was that damn, unrelenting restlessness in my lower body. Every time I shifted even slightly on the hard wooden chair, the rigid bridge of the resin cage chafed against my skin. The constant arousal of the past few days pulsed in short, dull waves through my pelvis—a perpetual, feverish pull that both depleted me and kept me excruciatingly awake. My thoughts kept circling back to Loona’s promise for the weekend. It was Friday. If I did everything right today, if I fell in line…
The shrill ring of the school bell broke my trance in an instant. Chairs scraped across the floor, voices swelled, and the liberating weekend began for everyone—except for me.
I packed my bag, tucked the folder containing Emma’s finished history essay right on top, and shuffled down the hallway toward the exit.
“Hey, John!” someone called from behind me.
I turned around. It was Julian, catching up to me with his gym bag slung over his shoulder, punching my upper arm with a grin.
“Hey, corpse, you still among the living? In physics, you looked like you were seconds away from faceplanting onto the desk. We’re heading over to the skate park in a bit and then hitting Max’s place for some gaming. You coming? You definitely earned the weekend off.”
“I… I don’t know, Julian,” I started, trying to force a smile while cold sweat gathered at the nape of my neck. “I’m pretty wiped. I’ll probably just crash—”
Mid-sentence, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Two short, sharp, demanding pulses.
I pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and felt my stomach drop instantly:
*Main art room. Now.*
“You alright?” Julian asked, noticing my sudden pallor and furrowing his brow. “Who’s texting with that kind of urgency?”
“Nobody… I mean, just family stuff,” I lied hastily, pocketing the smartphone and taking a step back. “I… I have to head straight home, Julian. My stepmom wants me to run some errands before it gets late. Sorry, no gaming today.”
“Man, they’ve really got you on a tight leash lately,” he sighed, shaking his head. He gave me another pat on the shoulder and turned away. “Well, have a good weekend anyway. Hit us up if you manage to get out after all!”
“Will do. See you Monday,” I managed to choke out.
As soon as Julian disappeared into the stream of students heading for the doors, I turned on my heel and made for the stairwell.
My legs felt like lead as I headed down the steps into the basement. Only dim, gray light filtered through the frosted window wells. The risk of getting caught down here was real; teachers or the janitor could show up at any moment. Yet that sliver of public exposure was my only, fragile safety net—she wouldn't be able to completely cross the line in here. Or so I believed.
When I pushed open the heavy wooden door, Emma was already leaning with folded arms against one of the massive worktables in the center of the main art room. The air smelled of turpentine, damp clay, aged paper, and her heavy scent of roses.
“On time,” she noted without a smile. “Got it?”
Without a word, I pulled the folder from my bag and handed it to her. Six immaculately formatted pages, cleanly printed. Emma slowly flipped through the pages, skimming the footnotes and bibliography. A condescending smirk played at the corners of her mouth.
“Not bad at all, John,” she murmured, snapping the folder shut with a crisp thud. She laid it on the counter behind her, took a step toward me, and studied my face. “You look awful. Dark circles under your eyes. Guess you really were up all night working on it.”
“I delivered,” I rasped, my eyes fixed squarely on the linoleum floor. “We're square for this week. I need to go.”
“Square?” A mocking scoff. She stepped even closer, so near that I could feel the heat radiating from her body. “You leave when I say you can leave.”
Before I could back away, her hand dropped. She reached to grab me right where I was most vulnerable—the same casual, condescending humiliation as on the bench, asserting her total control and reminding me who held power over whom.
Her fingers clamped firmly around my crotch.
Yet instead of yielding fabric and soft flesh, she met hard, unforgiving resistance.
Emma’s hand froze instantly. Her eyes widened in confusion, her brows drawing together. She squeezed again, incredulously tracing the rigid, smooth contour, feeling the rounded cylinder and the wide ring at the base that didn't give an inch.
“What the hell…,” she muttered, stunned.
Panic surged through my veins like liquid ice. “Emma, stop!” I gasped, tearing myself backward with a jolt and crashing hard against a heavy wooden easel. The clatter echoed loudly through the room.
Emma didn't look startled. In the blink of an eye, her initial confusion morphed into a dark, malicious curiosity. She stared at my hands, which were reflexively shielding my crotch, and then back up at my sweat-drenched face.
“That wasn't bone,” she said slowly, the corners of her mouth twitching tellingly. “That’s plastic. Hard plastic. John… what do you have on down there?”
“None of your business! None at all!” I stammered, out of breath, my heart hammering in my throat. Every instinct screamed at me to run.
“Open your pants,” she commanded, her voice turning cutting and ruthless in an instant. She stepped toward me again. “Open them, or the video goes to the class chat this very second. I swear to god.”
The trembling of my hands gave me away completely. I was trapped. Every move was a betrayal of Loona, but the prospect of utter destruction before the entire school brought me to my knees. With numb fingers, I popped the button on my jeans and pulled the zipper down a few inches, just enough for the waistband of my boxers to give way.
Emma leaned in. Her gaze pierced through the opening, locking onto the glossy black resin shell, the narrow vents, and the solid lock sitting heavy on the side.
For a moment, there was dead silence. Only my ragged breathing tore through the stillness.
Emma stared, transfixed by the lock and the rigid casing. A crooked, almost incredulous smirk slowly crept onto her lips as she pieced together what the shape meant.
“You walk around wearing… a toy like that?” she breathed, half repulsed, half amused in disbelief, before her eyes landed on the padlock. “Wait… that's a cage, isn't it? You’re actually locked in down there?!”
“Emma, please… look away… keep quiet…,” I pleaded in a cracking voice, tears of humiliation burning behind my eyes. Desperately, I yanked the zipper back up and fastened my jeans with shaking fingers.
She took half a step back, picked up her shoulder bag, and tucked the history folder under her arm. She didn't know the full details yet, but the sight of the lock had been enough—she knew instinctively that she had just stumbled upon leverage a thousand times more potent than a shaky pet-cam clip.
“God, John… you're even more twisted than I thought,” she whispered, an icy, calculating gleam entering her eyes. “Guess I'll have to do a little research this afternoon on how something like that works.”
She looked me up and down one last time, completely triumphant.
“Get lost. I'll be in touch.”
Without another word, she turned on her heel and exited the room. The heavy wooden door clicked shut with a solid thud. I remained behind alone among the dusty drawing tables, trembling, my pulse racing.
She knew. And the moment she figured out who held the strings in a setup like this and what that key truly meant, she would come for it.
