The First Night of the Sentence

The First Night of the Sentence

Chapter 5 by NudeBare NudeBare

The first night was the worst. They released me into the custody of my family—naked, shivering, a digital ankle monitor already clamped around my leg. My father drove me home in silence, his eyes fixed on the road like he couldn’t bear to look at me. Mom sat in the back with me, her coat draped over my shoulders, crying so hard I thought she might break.

“It’s okay, Mija,” she kept saying. “It’s going to be okay.”

But it wasn’t okay. It was never going to be okay.

When we got to the apartment, Dad walked in front of me, blocking me from the neighbors. Mom rushed ahead to close the curtains, to make sure no one could see. Miguel was already in his room, his door closed, and I could hear him crying through the thin walls.

I stood in the middle of the living room, naked except for my mother’s coat, and looked around at the life I’d built. The scratched furniture. The stained carpet. The family photos on the wall—me at Miguel’s birthday, me and Mom at the beach, me and Elena at her wedding. All of them lied. All of them pretended we were happy.

I took off the coat and let it fall to the floor. I was naked, and I was home, and I had never felt more alone.

“I’m sorry,” I said, to no one and everyone. “I’m so sorry.”

But the words felt hollow, meaningless. Because the truth was, I wasn’t sorry I’d stolen. I was sorry I’d gotten caught.
