What will Winston test?

If the commands effect her mind

Chapter 5 by lightsout

Truth be told Winston knew it better than anyone else he was not a strong man. He was a learned one—an opportunist who had always understood that power either corrupted or simply revealed what had already been waiting beneath the surface. Standing before a woman of such beauty, hearing her speak of absolute finality with such calm certainty, the temptation to test the edges of that power rose in him almost at once.

“Does that include thoughts and feelings?” he asked.

Hippolyta nodded once.

“Indeed it does,” she stated. “The limits are set by you, my king.”

Winston felt the weight of the moment settle over him. He decided to test it then and there.

“Then I command you to love me as a wife loves her husband and lover,” he stated. “Fully, without reservation. You will consider me your other half. You will strive to serve me, remain faithful and loyal, and act only in my best interests.”

For a heartbeat nothing seemed to change. Then the shift moved through her like a quiet tide.

The cool formality in her blue eyes began to melt. A moment ago, she had regarded him with the measured composure of a queen receiving the sovereign she had chosen to recognize. Now that reserve slipped away, leaving something softer in its place. Her gaze lingered on him with an ease that felt almost familiar, as though she had known the shape of him long before this moment, as though the distance between them had only ever been temporary.

A quiet happiness warmed her face. It touched the corners of her eyes first, then softened her mouth, smoothing away the last traces of ceremony. There was contentment there too, deep and settled, the kind that asked for nothing more because it had already found what it wanted. And beneath it all, unmistakable in the way she looked at him, was love. She made no effort to hide it. No guarded glance, no careful restraint. She simply let him see.

Her shoulders remained straight, her bearing unmistakably proud, yet some small tension left them. The firmness of her mouth gave way to a gentler attentiveness, as though every part of her had quietly turned toward him. She still carried herself like a queen, tall and composed, but her authority no longer held him at arm's length. It seemed to gather around him instead, her loyalty shifting into something closer, more instinctive, woven so tightly with affection that duty could no longer be separated from desire.

Then she moved.

One step, then another, each slow and certain. There was no hesitation in her approach, no lingering trace of the respectful distance she had kept before. She crossed the space between them with the ease of someone following an impulse too natural to question, drawn toward him by nothing more complicated than the wish to be near.

When she reached him, she stopped close.

Close enough that he had to tip his chin slightly to hold her gaze. Close enough for the smallest changes in her expression to become impossible to miss. From just above, her eyes rested on his, bright with that same quiet happiness, softened by a love that seemed strangely at home there, as though it had been waiting behind all that composure for the moment she finally allowed it to show.

“My lord husband,” she stated.

Winston’s breath caught for half a second. The warmth of her body reached him across the small space between them, and the soft certainty in her expression left him no room to doubt that the command had taken hold. His pulse lifted as he took her in again, struck once more by how beautiful she was. For a moment he simply stood there, greedy and a little dazed by how completely she had come to him.
