Our Fourth and Fifth Contestants
Katie and Helen
Helen impatiently tapped her foot as she checked her phone clock. Again. She was beginning to think that maybe working with her sister wasn’t such a good idea. Twenty “five more minutes!” was more than Helen could take. They were supposed to leave an hour ago. Get breakfast, show up early… now they could forget about stopping for breakfast, they’d be lucky to make it on time.
Helen slowly approached the door to the bathroom, lifting her arms to her side so her leather jacket didn’t squeak. After a moment of creeping forwards, Helen heard the sound of yet another make up product opening. “Bye.” Helen declared, leaving out the much needed ‘stupid bitch’ as she began stomping to the door of the apartment, coming to terms with the fact that she really was going to have to evict her sister just so she could afford to survive in this city.
“No, no! Wait! I’m done.” Katie shrieked, scurrying out of the bathroom and clamboring to catch up to Helen, though the combination of her dress’ long pencil skirt and high heels made it a real struggle. “Oh my god, you can’t be serious.” Katie argued, gesturing to her sister’s state. Leather jacket, leather slacks, professional-ish boots, an askew necktie, and a bad case of tomboy bedhead.
“Katie, my motorcycle is the only mode of travel we have.” Helen retorted, grabbing one of the two helmets hung by the door. Katie’s eyes widened shaking her head, as her dyed blonde curls she’d spent twenty minutes on bounced adorable on her shoulders.
“We were gonna walk?” She protested. “I can’t put a helmet on this. It’s literally perfect.” She pointed to her hair as if it were a fact. “First day.”
“We were gonna walk an hour-and-a-half ago.” Came the answer, the helmet being pushed into Katie’s chest. “If we walked now, we’d be fifteen minutes late.”
Katie pouted and stomped her foot, looking at the helmet like it were a ball of hot garbage in her hand. “I cannot believe—“ she scoffed, forcing the helmet on and grabbing the leather jacket Helen insisted she wear while on the bike. “You need to get a car. Because I can’t keep—“
“Getting free rides from me? Totally agree.” Helen stomped out the door, Katie following a second later, silently. She knew that when Helen was in one of her moods, it was best to remain silent. She’d get over it. Just like rent. And dinner. And the surprise party with her ex…
But that wasn’t Katie’s fault! Helen never mentioned that they had broken up.
