Chapter 2: It Was Naughty of You...

Chapter 2 by ErosApostasia ErosApostasia

Continued from chapter 1:

"Are you an explorer, Ero?" she asks. "Or maybe a traveler?"

"I'm a wanderer," I tell her, meeting her gaze steadily. "And I do like to get lost. I would appreciate some company, if you want to go exploring. I wouldn't mind having an experienced Ranger at my side."

Ashley's eyes widen with excitement, a broad grin spreading across her face. She claps her hands together, practically vibrating with enthusiasm.

"A wanderer who likes to get lost?" she exclaims, her voice pitched high with glee. "Oh, Ero, we're going to get along just fine!"

Without hesitation, she reaches out and grasps my hand, giving it a warm, reassuring squeeze. Her skin is soft but her grip is confident—the grip of someone used to leading others through uncertain terrain.

"I would absolutely love to explore with you!" she says, starting to lead me deeper into the forest, her steps light and purposeful. "As a Ranger, it's kind of my job to know these woods inside and out. And as a person... well, let's just say I've been dying for an adventure like this!"

Her free hand gestures animatedly as she talks, pointing out various plants and landmarks—a cluster of wild mushrooms, a bird's nest high in an oak, the way moss grows thicker on the north side of the trees. She speaks with genuine passion, and I find myself drawn not just to her enthusiasm but to the depth of knowledge behind it.

We walk for a while, the forest enveloping us in its peaceful embrace. The air is cool and fresh, carrying the scent of earth and growing things. Birdsong filters through the canopy above, and the only other sound is the soft crunch of our footsteps on the forest floor.

Eventually, Ashley leads me to a large clearing where ancient tree stumps sit like natural seats, worn smooth by time and weather. The sunlight streams down here more directly, creating islands of brightness in the dappled shade.

"Let's take a break," Ashley suggests, settling onto one of the stumps across from me.

I lower myself onto another, and we both reach for our water bottles. The silence that settles between us is comfortable—the kind of silence that feels less like absence and more like presence. The forest seems to hold its breath around us, as if nature itself is waiting to see what happens next.

Ashley takes a long sip from her water bottle, her eyes closed in contentment. When she lowers it, there's a faint sheen of sweat on her brow, making her skin glisten softly in the dappled sunlight. A few strands of hair have escaped from her ponytail and cling gently to her neck.

"This is... wow," she breathes, her voice hushed as if afraid to disturb the tranquil atmosphere. "Sometimes I forget how beautiful it can be out here, away from the main paths. It's like... like the forest is sharing a secret with us."

She turns to face me fully, her legs crossed and her elbows resting on her knees. Her gaze is open and curious, a gentle smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

"Thank you, Ashley, for allowing me to explore like this," I say quietly. "Thank you for making the allowance. I apologize again for leaving the path. I—"

I falter, unsure how to continue, but Ashley's expression softens before I can finish. She reaches out and places a comforting hand on my arm. Her touch is warm and reassuring, her fingers lingering just a moment longer than strictly necessary.

"Oh, Ero, please don't worry about it," she says, her voice tender and sincere. "Honestly, I think the real crime would be if I didn't share this beauty with someone who appreciates it as much as you clearly do."

She leans back slightly, her eyes sparkling with mischief and warmth.

"Besides, I have a feeling you're not the type to make a habit of breaking rules lightly," she continues. "You strike me as someone who knows exactly what they're doing, even when it might not look like it to others."

Ashley uncrosses her legs and leans forward, her face now mere inches from mine. When she speaks again, her voice takes on a new quality—thoughtful, almost knowing.

"Which means... if you're asking for a consequence..." she says slowly, "then you probably want me to give you one."

She beams at me, smiling like a teacher who is about to give her student a gold star.

"Do you want a... consequence, Ero?" she asks, her tone playful but genuinely curious. "It was naughty of you... to wander off the path."

I stare at her, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. She's much younger than me—early twenties, most likely, while I'm forty-one. The age difference feels suddenly very present between us, and it only makes my embarrassment deeper, more acute.

"Ashley..." I say softly. "Ranger Lockhead... I—"

I lower my eyes, blushing deeply.

"Y-yes," I whisper.

Ashley's eyes widen slightly at my shy admission, a pretty blush coloring her own cheeks. She sits back slightly, giving me a moment to breathe, though her gaze never leaves my face. There's a flicker of something deeper in her eyes—intrigue, perhaps, or a tentative sort of attraction mixed with something more complex: the awareness of power, and the responsibility that comes with it.

"My, my, Ero," she purrs, her voice taking on a teasing lilt that somehow manages to be both playful and sincere. "It seems you really do want to learn your lesson, don't you? How... commendable."

She stands up slowly, deliberately, smoothing out her khaki shorts. The movement is unhurried, giving me time to process what's happening. Then, with a playful wink, she extends her hand toward me.

"Well then, since you asked so nicely..." she says, her voice taking on that same teasing quality, "why don't you come with me? I think I know just the consequence for a naughty wanderer like yourself."
