Wanderlust
Chapter 1
Park Ranger Ashley Lockhead steps through a break in the bushes, her eyes widening as she spots me by the creek. She brushes a stray leaf off her shoulder and removes her Ranger hat in one smooth motion. A bright, bubbly smile spreads across her face—not authoritative at all, just genuinely happy to see a friendly face.
"Hey!" she calls out, her voice carrying easily across the water. "I thought I heard someone back here. You're definitely off the marked path, you know... but I won't tell if you won't."
She moves closer, gesturing toward the creek with an easy confidence.
"It's actually a lot prettier back here, isn't it?" she continues. "I was just finishing my patrol, and I was starting to get a little bored. Do you mind if I take a 'site inspection' break with you? I've always been curious about what's on this side of the creek."
I clear my throat nervously. "Sure... Miss...?"
“I'm Ashley. Ashley Lockhead, or 'Ranger Lockhead' if you want to be formal”
She clasps her hands together in front of her chest, leaning in just a little closer, her wavy brunette hair catching the dappled light.
"I'm Eros Apostasia," I say, meeting her curious gaze. "Please, call me Ero."
Ashley's eyes light up at the introduction. She gives a quick, enthusiastic nod, her hair bouncing with the movement.
"Ero! That's such a cool name," she says softly. "It sounds... I don't know, almost ancient? Like something out of one of those old myths I read about."
She giggles—a sound that's soft and breathy—then seems to realize she's gotten ahead of herself.
"I'm not in any trouble, am I?" I ask, a note of concern creeping into my voice. "I'm sorry for wandering off course. I mean, I'll accept the consequences... if you need to give me one."
Ashley lets out a bright, melodic laugh, waving her hands dismissively in front of her. She shakes her head so quickly her ponytail swishes against her collar.
"Trouble?" she says, her voice warm and reassuring. "Oh, goodness, no! Not at all. I promise I'm not some scary warden."
She steps a little closer, tilting her head curiously as her voice drops into a playful, conspiratorial whisper.
"Besides, if I gave everyone a consequence for exploring, I'd have a line of angry hikers stretching all the way back to the parking lot!" she continues. "Rules are important, sure, but sometimes the best things happen when you wander off the trail, right?"
She pauses, her bright blue-gray eyes scanning my face with an earnest, almost innocent intensity. A small, thoughtful frown tugs at her lips.
"Though..." she says softly.
"Though?" I prompt, smiling despite my nervousness.
Ashley bites her lip slightly, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her utility belt. She looks down at the ground for a split second before looking back up at me, her expression turning thoughtful and deeply inquisitive.
"Though... you seem different than the usual tourists," she admits, her voice losing its frantic energy and becoming softer, more sincere. "Most people who wander off the trail are either complaining about getting lost or frantically trying to find their way back to the snacks. But you... you seem very calm. Almost like you knew exactly where you were going, even without a map."
She tilts her head again, a strand of hair falling over her eye. She doesn't brush it away, instead watching me intently, waiting for my answer.
"Are you an explorer, Ero?" she asks. "Or maybe a traveler?"
"I'm a wanderer," I tell her, meeting her gaze steadily. "And I do like to get lost. I would appreciate some company, if you want to go exploring. I wouldn't mind having an experienced Ranger at my side."
Ashley's eyes widen with excitement, a broad grin spreading across her face. She claps her hands together, practically vibrating with enthusiasm.
"A wanderer who likes to get lost?" she exclaims, her voice pitched high with glee. "Oh, Ero, we're going to get along just fine!"
Without hesitation, she reaches out and grasps my hand, giving it a warm, reassuring squeeze. Her skin is soft but her grip is confident—the grip of someone used to leading others through uncertain terrain.
"I would absolutely love to explore with you!" she says, starting to lead me deeper into the forest, her steps light and purposeful. "As a Ranger, it's kind of my job to know these woods inside and out. And as a person... well, let's just say I've been dying for an adventure like this!"
