Marcus glances over at you, his brown eyes following your finger to the strange machine. "Fuck if I know, man. Looks like some weird art installation shit," he says, scratching his jaw. "But it says 'free' so..."

You step closer to the machine, your sneakers squeaking slightly on the polished mall floor. The smaller text scrolls continuously on the digital panel, but it's maddeningly vague:

"TRANSFORM YOUR REALITY"

"BECOME WHO YOU'VE NEVER BEEN"

"DURATION RANDOMIZED"

"SAFE • REVERSIBLE • UNFORGETTABLE"

"STEP IN ALONE • EXIT CHANGED"

There's literally nothing useful here. No manual, no explanation of what kind of transformation it means. Just cryptic marketing bullshit that tells you absolutely nothing concrete.

"The fuck does 'become who you've never been' even mean?" Tyler says, stepping up beside you. He's the tallest of your group at 6'2", with a perpetual smirk that makes him look like he's always in on some joke nobody else gets. "Like, is it gonna make me fucking Batman or something?"

Derek laughs, a deep rumble from his broad chest. The guy's built like he should be playing college football instead of hanging at the mall. "Probably just changes your outfit or some shit. Makes you look like a different person for photos."

"But why males only?" Evan asks quietly. He's always been the thoughtful one, actually reading shit while the rest of you just plow ahead. His pale fingers trace the warning text. "That's fucking weird, right? Like, really specific."

Marcus circles the machine slowly, peering at it from different angles. "There's no slot for money. No card reader. Just that single door and the screen. And look—" he points at a small camera lens near the top, "—it's definitely tracking something."

"Only one way to find out what it does," Tyler says with that cocky grin. "Someone's gotta go in."

All four of them turn to look at each other. Then, almost in unison, they turn to look at you.

"Oh hell no," you start, but Marcus is already grinning.

"Come on, Nate. You're the smallest. If something goes wrong, you can squeeze out easier," he says, which makes absolutely no fucking sense but gets nods from the others anyway.

"Dude, I am NOT getting in some random machine that could do literally anything," you protest, your voice going up half an octave like it always does when you're nervous.

Tyler crosses his arms. "Okay, but consider this: you're also the one none of us will miss if it like, teleports you to another dimension or whatever."

"Fuck you, Tyler."

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding," he laughs. "But seriously, someone should try it. And it's not gonna be me."

Derek nods. "We could draw straws or something."

"Or," Marcus says slowly, "we could all just admit we're curious as shit but too pussy to actually do it, and go get food court Chinese instead."

The machine pulses with another wave of neon light, the hum of its electronics barely audible over the mall's background noise. The door remains closed, waiting.
