What's next?
The Lifted Secret
I will never understand why that decision was taken. The fact that is impossible to be sure about who exactly was in the room when it was settle, and where that room was, don’t help my effort of reasoning one bit. Presumably the heads of the main Nocturnal Courts on Earth had to be involved in some capacity.
Or was that, well, one can end up mad thinking about that sort of thing.
Any well-informed vampire knows there are darker things than vampires in the night. A vast and terrible night between the starts. Impossibly ancient.
Those things rarely get involved in decisions like that. They barely touch our civilization. However, they are not to be questioned. If those powers had determined the end of the secret, no other explanation would be necessary.
I don’t think so. To me that explanation sounds like humans telling themselves that their child died “because was the will of God”.
If you need that sort of comfort that is fine. Says something about you, nothing about the situation outside your mind. Most likely, in that case, was not superior forces beyond out comprehension. Was a political decision, made by vampires like you and me.
Older than me, likely, what makes them a lot older than you. Nevertheless, just people like us.
A number of old timers may have awakened from long-sleep more or less at the same time.
You must know, the Secret was never very popular among old timers. Generally speaking, the idea was never approved by more than a small minority among them.
I understand the first Secret Law only took place in large scale after the Ice Age. Vampires who formed their idea of what being a vampire should mean during or before that period usually do not see the point in hide our existence from humans.
Of course, the Secret was abandoned. Then came back, as vampiric law. Only to be abandoned again. Process repeats many times.
More recently, the Secret Law was stablished 2800 years ago. As part of the preparation for the development of sentient AIs, inter-planetary colonization and Inter-Stellar travel. That is about to start in the next century, probably. And should take another thousand or thousand and a half years to fully flourish.
I had been a vampire for 5.000 years when the Secret Law was approved. We had debates inside our family for 500 years about the subject. What it could mean to us, in practical terms. Which doors would be open, which ones would close.
There was moments of lenience, limited exceptions to the law, instances of unusual excess of **** in the application of the law too.
Now, it is just over, and there was no previous discussion about.
Our family seems to be completely excluded from the process. Either that, or the process itself was very unusual.
I happen to have allies outside the family, who are Blessed Priests. Their grow Holly Seed gives them access to a net of information older and deeper than any other. Even them had no idea about that change, up to half a decade before it materialize.
Global Communication by internet, in real time, helped speed up the process. Still, even considering that. Was obviously a rushed improvised process.
One year, only a few chosen individuals outside vampiric community knew about us. Next year, all human beings who had normal sense of reality knew that vampires had not been a fantasy or a myth. We exist, need to hunt humans for blood sometimes, against their will, and it eventually may result in the **** of some of our preys. Sunlight burn us to smoking charcoal piles. We never age. They knew all that.
A few more months, about every nation on Earth had laws for peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires. Mutual compromises, so called.
Understand what I mean? All too easy. Way too fast.
Some conflict, some violent tensions exploding in regional scale. Nothing nearly as damaging as what a change that deep should elicit.
I adapted, of course. You have only 30 years of experience as a vampire. For you, the secret was the only reality you even knew. This is probably even harder to swallow to you than it is for me. You are adapting! Why I would not?
Still, was not right. Should never had happened.
Not like that, anyway.

Inside the Box
Cosmic Urban Fantasy
I am following what is turning into me general inclination, of tell short stories that may mix or not but paint a picture of a setting. At first vampires were supposed to be a secondary element, they are not that important in the first chapters. Now, as more chapters came, this is turning into a story about vampires with some other things in the background. In any case, I am dealing with the trope outside the usual biblical/mythic element. My primary frame here is Astronomic Time Scale, and that's where this "Cosmic" in the subtitle came from. I cannot really promise any "horror" and there is some minor light eroticism. Pretty pink glasses most the time. As optimist utopian flavour as I can go. Hope you like.
