Community
Welcome, good morning. We have cookies, orange juice and hotdogs in that side. Also hot coffee. I know most of you, but we have not spoken for some time. You all know what it is about, and I don’t want to give the impression that I am treating anyone here as a child. Nevertheless, I will start by saying it out loud. To not have the elephant standing in the middle of the room.
My cousin is standing right there, and he is the sheriff. He asked me to be here, and speak with you today. Still, this is a illegal reunion. Anything about this conversation leaves this room, every person here is going to face charges for domestic terrorism. This is so serious that all the procedure takes place in secret of justice for national-security sake.
That is why we had to be sure no one bought a cell phone or any other device with a microphone.
Bob though you have the right to know those things. Get the closest thing possible to a fair change of fight back if one of them targets you or your family.
Like many of you he didn’t wanted to have anything to do with me up to recently. For good reason, general consensus was that I was some sort of gang member, gangster or worse. Kind of “worse”, actually, would be the reality. Now that they are no longer hiding their existence, is possible to talk about the truth.
I have been for the last 25 years a member of a sub-culture that is less organized than a secret society and less pious than a cult. We called ourselves “Hunters”, as in “Vampire Hunters”, and what we had in common was the activity of hunting and destroy vampires.
Now is legal for them to hunt us, and we have the right to self-defence only in individual bases, we are not supposed to defend each other. Unless the person under attack is a close relative as defined by law. More important, authorities will tell you nothing about how to defend yourself against a vampire. What they are, for practical purposes, and how to deal with that.
Most of them look like humans, normal people, and that gives many people the illusion that somehow is enough to just be brave and fight back. Punch, kick, etc.
Today, I will tell you a little about the reality of this situation.
Vampires are no all the same, there are huge differences between individuals and groups, categories, etc. However, in any case, even against the weakest vampire you can find, you have zero chance to win a “fair fight”. That is the first thing I want you to understand.
A “newborn” vampire, as they call it themselves, days, years or even a few decades old. This fellow has many times the strength and the speed of a human. The chickens are weaker than the roosters, but the strongest human man on Earth is still as good as a ragged doll in the hands of a newborn vampire girl. No chance.
Most of them have the fangs, and can expose or hide them, when they are hiding their fangs they easily pass for normal people.
They can see, hear and smell better than us. However, most of them will miss strong smells if they are not paying attention. Because they do not need to breath, they only need air in their lungs to speak, and when they are not taking air in and out they do not feel any smells.
Their powers grow as time passes, so, the oldest vampire is stronger, faster, harder to hurt, heals faster, etc.
Even the youngest ones can take many bullets from a revolver, pistol or shotgun, before slow down. Unless they are already starving, in which case their healing becomes much slower. However, they are still strong and fast, faster than ever actually.
We used to hunt vampires in groups. At least seven tested vampire hunters to destroy one single vampire. We used military rifles, grenades, explosive traps, and steel wires.
The game is simple. Your goal as hunter is to immobilize the vampire without hit the ribcage. Either cut all arms and legs, decapitate the vampire, or both. To permanently destroy a vampire you must not touch the heart until you have the vampire immobilized. Next step is to cut the organ from the vampire chest, intact. Finally, you expose the hearth of the vampire to direct sunlight.
When you do that all traces in the body that revealed that was a vampire disappear, and you have a mutilated human corpse in your hands, as far as any human doctor can see. Minus one hearth.
To be able to do any of that, the Hunter community practices a mental discipline, a martial art-meditation if you will. Know as Mind-Shield discipline.
So far, I only spoke about the basic physical capacities of all vampires. The authorities admit those things exist, even if they never go into much detail about the extent of what vampires can do. A natural advantage almost all vampires have, also, is mind-control.
Vampires can hear superficial thoughts and mood, they are particularly sensible to feelings directed to them, from people nearby. Without competent mind-shield preparation someone trying to approach a vampire deliberately would be noticed easily. Some vampires can whisper telepathic commands from distance, all but the most inexperienced vampires can give a human commands if they have eye-to-eye contact, and any human would find almost impossible to disobey.
Mind-Shield allows some degree of protection against those commands, but we do not take any risks. We mostly rely on the mental protection to ambush the vampire. Once they know something is wrong, we move fast and decisively.
Most vampires the Hunter Packs ambush and destroy are children of the nigh less than 500 years old. In vampiric society a person is considered “child” up to 1.000 years or more after the transformation. However, almost all vampires we used to kill where what vampires call “lowlife”. Those are the vampire criminals who do not belong to any formal organization in Vampire Society. They live alone or in small groups and other more fortuned vampires want them all destroyed.
Those who are not “lowlifes” are “nobles”. To destroy a Noble brings great status to a hunter, in our subculture. The Noble Vampires are the vampires who “came out of the closed” in their “Revelation”. They are their civilized society. To destroy one you need to set the perfect ambush, and vanish in the air after, because vampire authorities will try to stop you, the friends of your prey will try to stop you and may seek to avenge the vampire you killed.
Some lowlifes have one, two, even three special powers. Things impossible to predict if you don’t have detailed information about that specific individual. Think about all super-powers in movies, games and comic books. You are likely to find any one of those. Things that bend logic and completely ignore the laws of physics.
Lowlifes may have a few of them, most have not. Noble vampires, you can count they with vampiric powers. Three, five, even nine different powers. Nobles are also trained to fight strategically, they carry weapons like we do, and know all they need is to buy time because help is on their way the moment they call for it.
There is another kind of vampire, that is called “feral”. I do not know where they came from, if they are a different sort of vampire or something else.
Ferals have no intelligence, they are mindless predators, often very smart and cunning, but like a dog can be smart and cunning. They are generally speaking stronger, faster and more tough than rational vampires.
Law says to you that all vampires need to hunt humans. Hunting is an organic necessity for them and they need their preys to resist. Try to escape, fight back. That is the reason why law now allows vampires to hunt humans. They cannot live without it. Just drink our blood from voluntaries, or the blood of animals, would not work.
That much is true. All vampires need to hunt, and during their moments of “Hunt Ritual” they sometimes isolate themselves from other vampires.
That is what gives hunters a chance. Our window of opportunity to destroy noble vampires is when they are hunting, With lowlifes and ferals, there is the possibility to follow them back to the place where they hide during the day.
Vampires burn in sunlight, but that do not destroy them for good. Blood, human blood, will bring a vampire back from a pile of charcoal. Only by exposing the heard directly to daylight you can be sure this vampire is destroyed. You also need to take under consideration that the idea that vampires became lethargic during day is a myth.
May be true for some vampire, individually, but most of them are as active as we are when the sun in in the sky. They just know they need to hide from it, and if possible they prefer to do so bellow the ground.
I an instant I will be answering any questions you bring me. I just want to say one last thing.
I stopped hunting when the disclosure happened. Don’t do that, anymore.
Those hunters how are still active either embraced fully criminal lives, knowing they would be considered terrorists by human authorities. Not just by vampires. Or, they restrict their activities now to only hunt lowlifes and ferals.
To me, that is disgusting. Is almost the same than work for the leeches directly.
They are our enemy, the natural and definitive enemy of humanity. No compromise, no peace, can be stablished between “civilized authorities” in both sides. We are not supposed to accept their existence.
That’s all I wanted to say!
Your time.

Cosmic Urban Fantasy
I am following what is turning into me general inclination, of tell short stories that may mix or not but paint a picture of a setting. At first vampires were supposed to be a secondary element, they are not that important in the first chapters. Now, as more chapters came, this is turning into a story about vampires with some other things in the background. In any case, I am dealing with the trope outside the usual biblical/mythic element. My primary frame here is Astronomic Time Scale, and that's where this "Cosmic" in the subtitle came from. I cannot really promise any "horror" and there is some minor light eroticism. Pretty pink glasses most the time. As optimist utopian flavour as I can go. Hope you like.
