A Private Conversation
The following Monday, Walter found himself standing before the imposing oak doors of the local high school. He wasn't wearing his grease-stained overalls today; instead, he had donned a crisp button-down shirt and trousers, looking every bit the respectable gentleman—though his pockets were still heavy with brass tools and his eyes were far too sharp for a casual observer.
The meeting was set for 3:30 PM in Mr. Henderson’s office.
As Walter walked through the corridors toward the physics department, he kept his wits about him. He wasn't just there to discuss Peter; he was an observer of human mechanics. He noticed how students moved, how they interacted, and how the social "gears" of the school turned.
He passed a group of female students walking toward the library—bright-eyed, chatting loudly. He saw Mr. Henderson standing by his classroom door, leaning slightly against the frame with a clipboard in hand. As the girls passed, Walter watched closely.
Henderson’s gaze didn's just follow them; it lingered with an intensity that felt out of place for a professional educator. It wasn't a casual glance; it was a calculated appraisal. Walter noted how the teacher's eyes would scan from head to toe, and how he would subtly straighten his posture as they walked by, perhaps trying to project an air of authoritative wisdom.
The meeting itself was held in Henderson’s office. The room smelled strongly of old paper and expensive cologne—a scent that seemed meant to impress.
Mr. Henderson sat behind a desk cluttered with heavy textbooks. He was a tall, lean man with sharp features and hair that was precisely combed. As he spoke about Peter's "lack of structure," his eyes would occasionally drift toward the window or the door, as if looking for a distraction—or perhaps waiting for someone to walk past.
"Mr. Henderson," Walter began, his voice calm but carrying a weight that demanded attention. He sat in the hard wooden chair, leaning forward slightly. "Peter mentioned you have very... specific standards for how physics should be understood."
Henderson smiled, a thin, practiced expression. "Physics is about absolute laws, Mr. Smith. There is a right way and a wrong way to interpret the forces of nature."
"Indeed," Walter replied, his eyes narrowing as he watched Henderson's hands. The teacher's gaze was restless. Every time a student walked past the frosted glass of the office door, or every time a female faculty member's footsteps echoed in the hall, Henderson’s eyes would dart toward the door with a predatory sort of curiosity before snapping back to his paperwork.
