Shadow's gaze caught the slight jiggle of her curves beneath the tight hearts-outfit—something he'd long ignored as just her style. But now? Now it mesmerized him, the way her hips swayed, tan fur gleaming under the dim streetlight, stirring an unfamiliar heat in his core. He cleared his throat, shaking it off, and extended the Blue Ruby. She took it eagerly, but instead of clutching it, she slipped it into a plastic bag, sealing it tight. Shadow's brow furrowed. "Wait—why the bag?"

"The Blue Ruby's an ancient artifact," Rouge explained, her voice dropping to that expert lilt, eyes sparkling as she held the bagged gem at arm's length. "Legend has it, it amplifies lustful desires or unearths suppressed ones—like a key to the heart's hidden vaults." She leaned against the wall, posture casual but accentuating her figure, as Shadow listened, though his eyes betrayed him, tracing the shapely curve of her ass, imagining the soft give under his touch. He scolded himself sharply—this wasn't him, the Ultimate Life Form reduced to base urges. "The tale goes: two lovers torn by an arranged marriage. The man swore he'd die before wedding another; she vowed not to perish alone. Next day, both gone, clutching twin gems born from their final, passionate night—bodies entwined in defiance, love and lust fusing their essences. United, they formed the Blue Ruby, enchanted to ignite forbidden flames, binding souls in eternal desire." She caught his stare, smirking. "And judging by how you're eyeing me, handsome, the legends hold water. That's why the bag—I'm not risking a touch." Shadow's face burned neon, turning away in a rare flush, pulse racing.

Shadow balked, voice defensive, shame twisting in his gut. "I don't know what you're talking about—it didn't affect me." First, ogling her like some lecher, reducing her to curves; second, handling the artifact so carelessly—what if it had warped him further?

"Shadow, please, don't insult my intelligence," Rouge replied, sighing as he met her gaze. "I'm used to that look you've tried hiding—the one where men undress me with their eyes." He looked down, quills prickling. "Probably entertaining dirty thoughts I'd rather not hear." She pocketed the bagged ruby, her sigh deepening with a **** edge that tugged at him, fist clenching. He drew a deep breath, thumbs brushing her knuckles gently. "I don't need some gem to tell you you're more than your body. You're brilliant, fierce, cunning. Anyone who sees only the surface is a fool." Shadow stated firmly, releasing her as a faint pink dusted Rouge's cheeks. "Keep that ruby bagged." She nodded, still stunned by the pep talk—from Shadow, of all people? Unbelievable. Shaking it off, she scanned the canyon remnants, wings twitching. "Found a clue—scuff marks. He headed south."

The duo refocused on the trail, boots crunching over canyon dust, but Shadow and Rouge shared a lingering thought amid the mission's pull: Was that outburst pure Shadow, or the ruby's whisper awakening something real? Her wing brushed his arm accidentally, sending a jolt neither acknowledged—yet.
