What's next?

Infinite Twilight

As Shadow and Rouge glided across the rugged terrain of Rustic Canyon, the warm desert wind whipped through their fur and feathers. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the cracked earth and jagged rock formations. Shadow, ever the stoic one, broke the silence with a question that had been nagging at him since their mission began. "So, what did Infinite look like after his defeat?" he asked, his red eyes scanning the horizon as he pondered the fate of their old adversary.

Rouge smirked, her wings fluttering slightly to maintain her hover as she followed faint traces shimmering in the sky like heat haze. "If you mean before he tried to blow himself up," she replied, her voice laced with sarcasm, "he's still wearing that creepy helmet, but there were plenty of scars crisscrossing his body from the beating he took from Gadget and Sonic." She cringed visibly, recalling the gruesome sight. "As for where the Phantom Ruby used to be, it was like a big, charred hole in his chest, with his clothes burned away around it. Given how he sent Eggman flying with those lenses, I bet there's some serious resentment brewing over Eggman reclaiming his precious ruby." She pointed out the anomaly for a moment before noticing Shadow motioning with his hand, urging her to focus on the ground below.

"The tracks stop here," Shadow said, crouching to examine the dusty ground more closely. The air was thick with the scent of dry sagebrush, and tiny pebbles crunched under his boots. "This must have been where the mysterious benefactor picked him up. It's odd—there's no trace, not even tire marks. It's like he just vanished off the face of the earth."

Rouge paused, a mischievous glint in her eye as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small pouch of glitter. "What are you doing?" Shadow asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Just watch," she whispered, closing her eyes. Shadow followed her lead, shutting his as she blew the fine powder from her hand. A soft sparkle filled the air, and when they opened their eyes, more pronounced footprints emerged on the ground, glowing faintly like luminescent trails. Shadow's expression shifted from bewilderment to impressed surprise. "How did you do that?"

Rouge looked at her friend with a smirk, her voice velvety and smooth as ever. "You'd be surprised by how much everyday items can help in the shadows. I got the idea from Amy—she was telling me about babysitting Cream one time when they spilled glitter everywhere. It was practically impossible to clean up; it sticks to everything." She chuckled softly. "Given we're dealing with a so-called illusion master, little surprises like this go a long way."

"Impressive," Shadow admitted, a rare compliment that made Rouge's wings twitch with pride. "Now we have a trail... faint but usable." He took the lead, following the sparkling path as Rouge kept pace beside him. The canyon walls loomed higher as they progressed, the fading light painting everything in hues of orange and purple.

They arrived at a stop, and Rouge bent down to refresh the trail with more glitter. They pressed on, repeating the process several times—the glitter revealing the path only to fade after a short distance. After the fourth application, Rouge sighed, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow. "You know, I'm starting to think I should have brought more glitter."

Shadow paused, his instincts kicking in. "Wait, let me check something." His hand glowed with a yellow energy, the air humming with chaotic power. "Chaos Spear!" He thrust his palm to the left, sending a bolt of energy that burned a precise hole through a nearby rock formation. The acrid smell of scorched stone filled the air. "Just to test," he explained grimly.

As they moved forward and circled back, his worst fears were confirmed: the same rock formation reappeared, now with the fresh hole in it. Rouge dusted more glitter, illuminating the illusion's persistence. "Damn," Shadow muttered, frustration etching his features. "We're in an illusion."

Rouge looked around, annoyance flashing in her teal eyes as she scanned left and right, the canyon seeming to shift subtly around them. "Already? So Infinite's got us trapped. How do we break out?"

Shadow sighed, his quills bristling. "We'll need to find him, wherever he is." He paused, his sharp senses picking up a disturbance in the air. Something invisible hurtled toward Rouge—he lunged, pulling her out of the way just in time. Her pouch of glitter spilled into the air, coating a hidden, familiar shape that materialized like a glitch in reality.

Shadow didn't hesitate, delivering a powerful kick to the being, who staggered back. Rouge recovered quickly, flanking from the other side and kicking it toward Shadow. They worked in perfect tandem, exchanging kicks in a flurry of motion—their boots thudding against flesh with satisfying impacts—until Shadow landed a solid blow to Infinite's stomach and Rouge followed with one to his face. The jackal crumpled, his illusion shattering to reveal his scarred form.

Shadow crossed his arms, his voice dripping with disdain. "Did you really think we wouldn't find you, weakling?" He grabbed Infinite by the collar, lifting him effortlessly. But Infinite smirked, his hand glowing as a strange ****—a telekinetic blast—sent both Shadow and Rouge flying back. Shadow twisted mid-air, catching Rouge as she landed atop him with a soft thud. In the chaos, neither noticed the Blue Ruby slipping from Rouge's pocket, tumbling to the ground.

Infinite's eyes lit up with triumph as he snatched the gem, rushing toward Shadow. But a mysterious surge of energy blasted him back in surprise. Shadow bounced across the rocky terrain, pain shooting through his side, as Rouge charged in with fury. "Give me back that gem, you stupid jackal!" she snarled, her kicks coming fast and furious, each one fueled by anger. "That was a gift from Shadow!" she emphasized, her wings flaring for extra momentum.

Infinite caught her leg mid-strike, a minor shockwave rippling outward as his eyes glowed with an eerie red light. "What are you doing?" Rouge demanded, struggling against his grip. Shadow surged forward, breaking up the fight with a powerful shove. But suddenly, more copies of Infinite materialized around them—clones flickering into existence like digital ghosts.

The real Infinite smirked, floating upward with the baggie containing the Blue Ruby clutched in his paw. Shadow glared daggers at him while fending off the clones with precise strikes. "Did you two really think you could defeat me?" Infinite cackled, his voice echoing unnaturally. He revealed a jagged piece of the broken Astroscopic lenses in his other hand. "Even a small fragment is enough to deal with pests like you."

Shadow raised his hand, energy crackling. "Chaos Spears!" Golden projectiles rained down on the clones and toward Infinite, exploding on impact with bursts of light and dust. But Infinite merely laughed, his form blurring as he combined the Blue Ruby with the lens shard. A surging flash of light erupted, blinding them—the air growing hot and charged like before a storm.

"This game is over," Infinite taunted, his voice booming. "Thanks to your foolish choice of carrying the Blue Ruby, and with my lenses, I can trap you where you belong! A place from which you'll never escape, because of what you are, Shadow!"

Shadow lunged forward, but the ground beneath Rouge gave way to a swirling void. She started to fall, her wings beating frantically. Shadow dove, catching her wrist just in time. He activated his air shoes, jets flaring with a whoosh, while Rouge spread her wings wide. Together, they fought the pull, muscles straining, hearts pounding in unison as Infinite's laughter echoed. The hole irised shut above them, sealing with a final, ominous rumble.

They tumbled into a strange realm, landing hard on a soft, ethereal ground that shimmered like twilight mist. The sky above was an eternal sunset—deep purples bleeding into fiery oranges, with no true night or day. The air was cooler here, carrying a faint, otherworldly hum, and strange, bioluminescent plants dotted the landscape, glowing softly.

Shadow helped Rouge to her feet, his grip firm but gentle. "Are you okay?" he asked, concern flickering in his usually impassive eyes.

Rouge nodded, still catching her breath, her eyes wide as she took in the surreal surroundings. The two paused, the adrenaline fading into wary awe. Rouge turned to Shadow, about to speak, when a small voice piped up from behind them.

Shadow whirled into a defensive stance, quills bristling. From the shadows of a crystalline rock crawled a strange little creature, no larger than a Chao. It was star-shaped, its body a pulsating mass of five radiant points that shifted like liquid starlight—each arm ending in delicate, finger-like tendrils that glowed with inner light. Its "face" was a cluster of tiny, curious eyes that sparkled like distant constellations, set in a central core that hummed faintly with energy. The skin, if it could be called that, was semi-translucent, revealing veins of shimmering plasma beneath, and it moved with an awkward, wobbly gait, leaving faint trails of sparkling dust in its wake. Despite its alien form, there was something almost humanoid in its posture—timid yet inquisitive—as if it were used to hiding from larger threats in this dim realm.

"What are..." Shadow began, his voice low and cautious.

The creature scurried behind the rock, peeking out with wide, luminous eyes. "What are you? Who are you?" it squeaked, its voice a melodic chime that echoed softly.

Shadow opened his mouth to respond, but Rouge gently placed a hand on his arm, stepping forward with her usual charm. "I'm Rouge the Bat, and this is Shadow the Hedgehog. Can you tell us where we are?"

The creature could only nod and said "You're in the Twilight"
