The Nexus Core
The hunting party emerged from the maintenance shaft into a narrow service gantry overlooking the vast, spherical chamber. The sight that greeted them was both awe-inspiring and terrifying. The Arcane Nexus Core hung in the center, a captive star screaming with contained power. The heat was a physical wall, the light blinding, the sound a physical pressure that made their bones vibrate. And there, moving with unhurried purpose along the chamber's lower walkway, was Nyxa.
She had already placed one of the crystalline charges at the base of a pylon. Its surface pulsed with a malevolent violet light, out of sync with the core's brilliant blue-white. She was moving towards the second pylon, her pack open.
"No!" Gabriella shouted, her voice swallowed by the roar.
Nyxa didn't even look up. She simply finished securing the second charge and turned, her starry eyes meeting theirs across the chamber. There was no surprise, only a cold acknowledgment. She had expected them.
"Take her!" Sterling commanded, her voice cutting through the din with military precision.
They moved as one, descending a steep metal staircase to the main walkway. The chamber's layout was a circular path around the core, with the four pylons spaced evenly. Nyxa stood between the second and third.
Aika was the first to engage. She closed the distance with the fluid, ground-eating strides of her iaijutsu, her new katua flashing from its saya in a draw-cut meant to sever Nyxa's spine. It was a perfect strike, born of years of disciplined practice even in peace.
Nyxa didn't block it. She flowed. Her body seemed to dissolve into shadow for a fraction of a second, the blade passing through empty air where she had been. She reappeared a pace to the left, her own wickedly curved dagger already in hand, lashing out at Aika's exposed side. Aika twisted, parrying with a **** scrape of steel, but the **** of the blow, coupled with the unnatural angle, knocked her off balance.
Sterling was there, shield leading, sword held back for a thrust. She advanced, a wall of disciplined ****. Nyxa didn't retreat. She stepped into Sterling's guard, her free hand striking not at Sterling, but at the shield's edge with a precise, open-palmed blow that resonated with a pulse of shadow-energy. The impact didn't shatter the shield, but it sent a numbing shock up Sterling's arm, spoiling her counter-thrust. Nyxa spun inside her defense, her elbow cracking against Sterling's helmet, stunning her.
Inch had used the distraction to flank, leaping from a lower railing, both knives aimed for Nyxa's kidneys. It was a move that would have gutted a lesser opponent.
Nyxa's tail, a weapon they had all forgotten, snapped up like a scorpion's sting. The bony spade cracked against Inch's wrist, sending one knife clattering away. Before Inch could recover, Nyxa pivoted, catching her other wrist in a vise-like grip, disarming her with a brutal twist and shoving her hard into the railing, knocking the wind from her lungs.
Gabriella and Lumen attacked together. Gabriella came in low, her shortsword aiming for Nyxa's legs. Lumen raised her hands, summoning a wave of nullifying darkness to dampen the tiefling's shadow-magic.
Nyxa leapt, a graceful arc that carried her over Gabriella's swing. As she descended, she flung a handful of fine, dark powder towards Lumen. It wasn't an attack, but a Shadow-Smoke. It swallowed Lumen's dark pulse and expanded, blinding her. Nyxa landed behind Gabriella, her foot hooking around the half-elf's ankle and yanking her feet out from under her. Gabriella hit the walkway hard, her sword skittering away.
The entire engagement had taken less than sixty seconds.
Nyxa stood amidst them, barely winded. Aika was clutching her side, a thin line of blood seeping through her clothes where the dagger had grazed her. Sterling was shaking her head to clear the ringing. Inch was gasping against the railing. Gabriella was struggling to rise. Lumen was coughing, blinded by the dissipating smoke.
Nyxa looked down at them, her expression unreadable. "You were legends once," she said, her smoky voice carrying strangely in the chamber's roar. "Now you're just… comfortable. Your edges are dull. You fight to protect his cage." She turned her back on them, walking calmly towards the third pylon. "Stay down. This doesn't concern you anymore."
She was right. They had fought as individuals, not as the cohesive, instinctive unit that had brought down giants and sorcerers. The Garden's years had softened the synergy between them. Nyxa had dismantled them with the effortless precision of a master solving a simple puzzle.
As she knelt to place the third charge, they were defeated. Not dead, but decisively beaten. The core's light glinted off the dark crystal in her hand, one step away from completing the circuit of annihilation.
