The Legend of the Golden Diaper
Betty turned away from the monitors, the static reflection dancing in her wild eyes. She grabbed a rusted crowbar and limped toward the back wall of the bunker, her massive vintage diaper swaying heavily with a wet, rhythmic thud-slosh.
"Stop crying over your friends," Betty barked, though her voice was lower now, vibrating with a strange intensity. "They are casualties of the 'Clean War.' But you... you might be something else."
She jammed the crowbar behind a stack of metal shelving units loaded with boxes of expired talcum powder. With a grunt that echoed through the room, she heaved the shelves aside. Behind them was a wall covered in a mural. It was crude, painted with grease, oil, and what looked disturbingly like dried brown paint, but the style was unmistakable.
It was a battle scene.
"They teach you about the 300 in school, don't they?" Betty asked, tracing the painted figures with a trembling finger.
"The Spartans?" Sarah sniffed, wiping her nose. "Yeah. They died fighting the Persian Empire. They were wiped out."
"Lies!" Betty spat. "Propaganda from the Toilet Regime! They didn't wear loincloths, girl. Look closer."
Sarah squinted at the mural. The warriors painted on the concrete weren't wearing leather skirts. They were wearing massive, bulky, white triangles. They held spears and shields, but their stance was wide, their hips were padded to grotesque proportions.
"The 300," Betty whispered reverently. "The Heavy Infantry. The first men to reject the tyranny of the latrine. They didn't fight for land. They fought for the right to never stop marching. To never break formation for a bathroom break."
Betty pointed to the central figure. He was taller than the others, his cape flowing red, his spear raised high. But it was his waist that commanded attention. While the other soldiers wore white, this king wore a garment that shone with a metallic yellow luster.
"Leonidas," Betty breathed. "And the Aurea Pannus. The Golden Diaper."
"The Golden Diaper?" Sarah repeated, feeling like she had stepped into a fever dream.
"It wasn't just gold fabric," Betty explained, her eyes widening. "It was an artifact of the Old Gods. Woven from fibers that no longer exist. They say it had... Infinite Capacity. Leonidas could wear it for a month. A year! He was a god among men, completely untethered from the biological chains that bind us."
Betty turned to Sarah, gripping her shoulders.
"The history books—the ones written by the Nanny Corporation—say they lost. They say they leaked. They say the enemy surrounded them and the smell gave away their position, and they were slaughtered in a moment of hygiene failure. That is the story they tell to keep us scared! To make us believe that without their 'modern' diapers and their 'schedules' and their 'Reformatories,' we are weak."
Betty leaned in close, her breath smelling of canned peaches and rust.
"But they didn't lose, Sarah. They didn't die."
"What happened to them?"
"They realized the world wasn't ready," Betty whispered conspiratorially. "So they went underground. Deep underground. Into the sewers, into the catacombs. They took the Golden Diaper and vanished, waiting for a champion. Someone who wasn't afraid to be a 'Natural.' Someone who would soil the floor of a dictator and call it freedom."
Betty stepped back, the heavy plastic between her legs crinkling loudly.
"I think the Golden Diaper is real. And I think it's the only thing powerful enough to break the Nanny. It’s not a myth, Sarah. It’s a weapon. And if we find it... we can flush their entire empire down the drain."
