What's next?
The Shadow
As I stood there looking up at the holy cross, I was suddenly overcome by an icy chill. A frosty wind swept past. Had a door opened? I should have heard that.
I didn't dare turn around to see what was happening behind me. The feeling that had come over me wasn't quite fear, more a gnawing unease. A premonition that something bad was about to happen.
I listened intently. At first I heard nothing, everything was quiet, only the pounding of blood in my ears sounded eerily loud. Then there was a noise. I heard soft footsteps, slow, lurking, coming closer.
Goosebumps crept up my spine. The fine hairs on the back of my neck stood on end.
I forced myself to breathe calmly and stand still. Surely it was just a lonely believer seeking comfort and peace in the deserted church. How would I come across if the future parish priest showed fear like a little girl? I had to radiate strength and trust in God. So I resisted the urge to turn around.
The footsteps came closer and closer, heading straight for me.
And then a long, dark shadow fell over me.
