Chapter Three: Muscle Memory
By the time the week settled back into routine, the weekend had dissolved into something neither of them could name.
Pam knew something had happened. Not in images or clear memories—those were gone—but in her body. In the way her pulse quickened whenever Glenn’s voice carried up from the warehouse. In how her thoughts stalled for a second too long when he passed her desk. There was a sensation of having crossed a line and stepped back again, barefoot, the ground still warm beneath her feet.
Glenn felt it too.
He couldn’t remember the exact moment things shifted—only that they had. His hands seemed to recall a shape his mind couldn’t place. Every time Pam smiled at him now, polite and distant, something restless stirred in his chest, like a question left unanswered on purpose.
Late afternoon found Pam making excuses she didn’t need.
The warehouse was quiet—too quiet. The hum of machinery was absent, replaced by the faint rhythm of breath and movement. She rounded the corner and stopped.
Glenn was in the middle of a workout.
His shirt lay discarded on a crate, his skin lightly slick with sweat, muscles moving with deliberate control. Pam stood frozen, her gaze roaming without permission—shoulders broad and flexing, arms tight with effort, the subtle dip at his waist. She felt a slow heat pool low in her stomach as she took him in, second by unguarded second.
He noticed.
Paused.
“Hey,” he said, turning slightly. “You need something?”
Her throat felt dry. “Uh—paper samples. Second shelf.”
She moved quickly, as if motion might shake off the awareness clinging to her skin. She reached up, stretching, fingertips grazing the edge of the box but failing to secure it.
Before she could try again, Glenn stepped in behind her.
“Careful,” he murmured.
His hands settled at her waist—warm, firm—and lifted her with effortless ease. The sudden contact sent a jolt through her, breath catching sharply as she gasped, more startled than scared. Her hands clutched the shelf instinctively.
“Oh,” she breathed. “Thank you.”
He didn’t answer right away.
From where he stood, her stomach was right there—soft, barely exposed where her shirt had ridden up. Her skin glowed faintly, the gentle hollow of her navel drawing his eye despite himself. His breath brushed against her as he exhaled, slow and unintentional.
Pam felt it.
The warmth. The awareness of being seen—noticed. Her lip slipped between her teeth as she inhaled sharply, her body responding before her thoughts caught up.
Time stretched.
Glenn leaned in, his restraint thinning to a thread. He pressed a brief, reverent kiss just above her navel—soft, fleeting, but deliberate.
Pam shivered.
She didn’t pull away.
When he set her back down, their faces were close enough to share breath. Their eyes locked, something unspoken flickering between them—recognition, desire, fear.
Then they kissed.
It was hungry in its hesitation—too fast, too intense for something that wasn’t supposed to exist. His hands curved around her waist again, grounding her; hers slid into his hair, fingers tightening as if afraid he might disappear. The warehouse seemed to hold its breath with them.
Pam broke away first, chest rising and falling. “I—Glenn. I should go. Upstairs.”
He reached for her without thinking, stopping himself just short. “Pam…”
She smiled—soft, flustered, unmistakably charged. “I have to,” she said, regret and promise tangled together.
Then she turned, pausing just long enough to glance back and wink.
Glenn laughed quietly and blew her a kiss.
Pam stepped out of the warehouse, cheeks flushed, body humming, knowing one thing with sudden clarity:
Whatever they’d forgotten, it was still there.
Waiting.
