Chapter Two: Between Sips and Silences
Pam hadn’t planned on sitting alone that afternoon.
The café across the street from the office was usually a refuge she shared—inside jokes with Jim, doodles on napkins, half-finished conversations. Today, she sat by the window with a sandwich she barely touched, stirring her coffee more than she drank it.
“Mind if I sit?”
She looked up to see Glenn, already shrugging out of his jacket, holding a paper cup like he belonged there.
“Oh—yeah. Sure,” Pam said, surprised but not displeased.
They sat in a comfortable quiet at first. Outside, traffic hummed. Inside, a spoon clinked softly against ceramic.
She sighed. “I feel ridiculous, you know. Being this… messed up.”
Glenn glanced at her. “Breakups do that. Especially when there’s more than one thing breaking.”
She smiled faintly. “Roy thinks I blindsided him. Jim—” She stopped, shaking her head. “Jim just… left. Stamford. Like I’d wait.”
Glenn leaned back slightly, studying her not unkindly. “Maybe he assumed you would.”
“That’s the worst part,” she said. “I think he did.”
There was a pause. Then Glenn spoke carefully. “Or maybe he didn’t think you’d wait at all. Maybe he figured you’d move on… and he’d do the same.”
Pam frowned. “You think he already found someone?”
Glenn shrugged. “Could’ve. Stamford’s not exactly a monastery.” His voice dropped, casual but pointed. “Could be doing all kinds of things while you’re stuck holding space for him.”
The thought landed heavier than she expected.
Pam looked down at her coffee. “I hate that it doesn’t sound impossible.”
Glenn softened then. “Hey. That’s not me saying you meant less. Just… that you shouldn’t put your life on pause for people who don’t ask you to.”
She let out a breath, something easing in her chest. “So what. I just… distract myself?”
He smiled. “I was thinking more like unwind. Have a little fun. Nothing dramatic.”
She hesitated. Then, quietly, “Like drinks?”
“Like drinks,” he confirmed.
The bar was louder than she expected, music pulsing through the air, lights low enough to blur edges. Pam found herself laughing more than she had in days, the **** loosening the tightness in her shoulders. Glenn was different here—less warehouse, more ease—his smile easy, his attention steady without being heavy.
They danced badly. They toasted to bad decisions and worse timing. At some point, she rested her head briefly against his shoulder and didn’t immediately pull away.
When he finally pulled up outside her apartment, the night felt suddenly fragile.
“Thank you,” Pam said, unbuckling slowly. “I needed tonight.”
“Anytime,” Glenn replied, meaning it more than he let show.
She leaned in—too quickly to overthink it—and kissed him.
It was clumsy at first, ****-soft and unsure, then warmer, more deliberate. His hand came up to her waist, steadying, not pulling. Her fingers curled into his shirt. For two minutes, the world narrowed to shared breath and unspoken things.
Then reality crept back in.
Pam pulled away, blinking, a little startled by herself. Glenn didn’t chase the moment—just smiled gently.
“Okay,” she said, breathless. “Okay.”
“Yeah,” he agreed. “Okay.”
They shared a quiet laugh, the kind that acknowledges something real without trying to define it.
“Goodnight, Glenn,” she said, opening the door.
“Get home safe, Pam.”
He watched as she walked toward her building, unsteady but smiling, keys jingling softly. When the door closed behind her, Glenn leaned back in his seat, exhaling.
Tomorrow, they’d both pretend this never happened.
But for now, the warmth of it lingered—and that was enough.
