What's next?
Search the Heartless
The water grew colder the deeper we swam. The vibrant oranges and pinks of the coral reef faded into muted blues and greys. The pressure increased, pressing against my skin, but my new form welcomed it. My dense muscle mass was built for the crush of the deep.
Ariel swam ahead of me, her green tail moving with a fluid, hypnotic rhythm. She was fast for a mermaid, agile and graceful, but I was pure torque. A single lazy stroke of my caudal fin kept me right at her shoulder.
"We're getting close to the Drop-off," she whispered, her voice carrying a tremor of nervousness. "Daddy forbade anyone from going past the sunken galleon. He says the currents are treacherous."
"It's not the currents he's afraid of," I rumbled, my voice a low vibration in the water.
My senses were screaming. The Ampullae of Lorenzini, the electrosensory pores dotted across my snout, were picking up faint, erratic pulses from the darkness ahead. It felt like static on a radio.
"Stop," I commanded.
Ariel froze, her fins flaring to brake. "What is it?"
"Heartless. Many of them."
I swam past her, placing my bulk between her and the abyss. The galleon loomed below us, its rotting hull encrusted with barnacles, its mast snapped like a toothpick.
From the shadows of the cargo hold, they emerged. Abyssal Divers. They weren't the cute, round Heartless found on the surface. These were sleek, eel-like nightmares made of shadow, with glowing yellow eyes and jaws that unhinged. They moved with jerky, unnatural speed.
There were a dozen of them.
"Stay behind me," I snarled, my dorsal fin raising aggressively. "And watch my flank."
The Heartless shrieked, a sound like grinding metal underwater, and surged forward.
I didn't wait. I launched myself to meet them. My shark physiology took over. I didn't just fight; I fed.
The first Diver lunged for my throat. I twisted, snapping my jaws shut around its midsection. My teeth, serrated and razor-sharp, sheared through the shadow-flesh instantly. I thrashed my head, tearing the creature in half, dissolving it into darkness.
Blood lust. It hit me like a ****. The taste of the fight, the movement of the water.
Two more flanked me. I swung The Solar Zenith in a wide, heavy arc. The water resistance made the strike slower, but infinitely heavier. The blade crushed the skull of one Heartless, sending a shockwave through the water.
The third one tried to bite my tail. Big mistake. I whipped my tail around with the **** of a battering ram. The impact pulverized the creature against the hull of the sunken ship.
"Behind you!" Ariel screamed.
I spun around. An Abyssal Diver had bypassed me and was rocketing toward Ariel. She held up her hands, conjuring a weak defensive bubble, useless at this depth.
I didn't have time to swim. I used the water pressure. I activated a burst of speed, my tail blurring. I slammed into the Heartless just as it opened its jaws to bite her.
I grabbed it with my clawed hand and slammed it into the seabed, kicking up a cloud of silt. I pinned it down and drove my Keyblade through its core.
The water cleared. The Heartless were gone. Only the floating hearts remained, drifting upward like red bubbles.
I hovered over the seabed, my chest heaving, my gills flaring rapidly to filter oxygen from the water. My blood was hot. My eyes were dilated, the black pupils consuming the iris.
Ariel slowly swam down to me. The silt settled on her red hair. She looked at the carnage, then at me. She should have been terrified. A rational creature would flee from a predator in a feeding frenzy.
But she swam closer.
"You..." she breathed, her blue eyes wide. "You moved so fast. I couldn't even track you."
I turned to her, my movements stiff with lingering aggression. "I told you. I am a shark."
She reached out. Her small, pale hand hovered over my arm. She hesitated, looking at the rough, sandpaper texture of my grey skin, contrasted against the lethal serrations of my arm fins.
"Is it... rough?" she asked softly.
"Touch it," I dared her. "If you're brave enough."
She pressed her palm against my bicep. "Oh," she whispered. "It feels like... like armor. Like stone."
She ran her hand down my arm, tracing the line of the muscle, over the scars of the transformation, down to my clawed hand. The contrast was electric, her soft, princess skin against my primal, shark-hide exterior.
"You're strong," she murmured, looking up at my face, staring right into my black, predator eyes. "Stronger than anyone in the palace. Even the guards."
"The guards are prey, Ariel," I said, leaning in close. I could smell her hormones shifting, fear mixing with a powerful, sweet attraction. The danger aroused her. "I am the Apex."
She didn't pull away. She floated there, her tail drifting lazily, her chest rising and falling against the purple shells.
"Are you hurt?" she asked, her gaze dropping to my chest where a Heartless claw had scratched a white line across my grey pectorals.
"It's nothing," I grunted.
"Let me heal it," she insisted.
She swam up, bringing her face level with my chest. She placed both hands on my pectoral muscle. A soft, green light glowed from her palms - Cure. The scratch vanished.
But she didn't remove her hands. She kept them there, feeling the slow, powerful thud of my heart beneath the muscle.
"Your heart beats so slowly," she noted.
"It's efficient," I said.
I reached out and grabbed her waist. My claws were careful not to tear her skin, but the grip was possessive. I pulled her flush against me.
"You did well, spotting the flanker," I told her, my voice rumbling in her chest.
Ariel blushed, a lovely pink shade spreading across her cheeks underwater. "I... I wanted to help. I don't want to just watch."
"Good," I said, releasing her slowly, letting her drift back but keeping her in my orbit. "Because the trench is deeper than this. And the things down there are hungry."
I turned back to the abyss.
"Please stay close, Princess. I need you to stay fully uninjured. If there's blood in the water... I might forget whose side I'm on."
Ariel shivered, her eyes locked on my muscular arms. She bit her lip, a look of thrilling uncertainty on her face, and flicked her fin to get closer to me.
