MIDST for 14 was the best she could come up with.

Mammon played REBEC next for 27 points. That pretty much closed off the board except for one spot...the PW tile.

She was down 73 points. She really had to use it...didn't she?

She racked her brain but the very best she could come up with was LAYERS for 36 points. That would put her up by 10, which meant she would be almost certain to lose. There was no point in suffering a punishment, a second one, just to lose.

Wait, she'd forgotten about her gems. She quickly pulled up the store. For 20 gems she could play it anyway but ignore the punishment, or for 10 gems she could reveal the best possible word. But if LAYERS was the best...

Wait. For 50 gems she could swap all her tiles and reset her time.

She hesitated, then tapped it. She searched her new tiles and finally found AWAKES for 52 points. Still a punishment, but perhaps enough to win the game.

Mammon played JOINT for 24 points. She'd done it. She'd won!

But at what cost? She stared at the board, at her two punishment tiles.
