Chapter 52 by lightsout
What's next
They talk of where Jon can go
Laughter rolled like thunder from the lower tables, clatter of trenchers mingling with the minstrels' lutes that wove through the haze of hearth smoke and spiced meat. Jon shifted in his seat at the high dais, the wolf-fur mantle heavy on his shoulders, the black leather jerkin drawing glances that slid away as quickly as they came. Jaime stood sentinel behind them, a white-cloaked shadow with green eyes that lingered on him like a secret touch.
Cersei leaned close, her goblet of Arbor gold swirling in lazy circles that caught the torchlight in amber sparks. Her breath grazed his ear as she murmured, "King's Landing will suit you," fingers slipping under the tablecloth to trace slow, teasing patterns along his thigh. "The Red Keep pulses with secrets—clash of steel in the tourney yards, hushed plots blooming in the gardens like nightshade. You'll come alive there, far from this icy grave."
Now Jocelyn turned to him on his other side, golden curls tumbling as she rested her chin on her hand, eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and warmth—Jocelyn's voice drawing him in as she continued. "It's not all shadows, though. The Blackwater sparkles under the sun, and the markets overflow with silks from Yi Ti, spices from the Summer Isles. What do you imagine doing there, Jon? Riding the Kingswood hunts? Or something quieter, like exploring the dragon skulls in the crypts?"
The fork in Jon's hand suspended, roasted venison cooling untouched as Jon's lips parted, ready for words that never came. The question burrowed deeper, twisting in his gut like a blade turned slow, unearthing doubts long buried beneath routine and resignation.
Silence stretched until a soft voice wove through it, drawing him back like thread on a loom.
"But Casterly Rock—that's where you'd find real splendour," The Queen stated. "Waves slamming the cliffs below, chambers hewn from stone veined with gold. We dashed through those passages as children, Jaime and I, ears pressed to the walls for the lions' distant roars echoing from the depths."
A low drawl slipped over his shoulder as Jaime leaned in from her guard post. "The Rock's a fortress and a palace in one—endless vaults, views that stretch to the horizon. You'd never tire of it, Jon. What say you? A visit after the feast?"
Jocelyn's warm fingers brushed his under the tablecloth, her hand closing in a gentle squeeze. "Or linger in the Landing first. Tell us—what pulls you south? Adventure? Power?"
Setting his fork down, Jon felt the questions pressing in, forcing him to confront the void where his future should have been.
Plans?
Beyond the vague shadow of the Night's Watch—a black cloak, a frozen wall, vows that severed him from everything—he had none.
No dreams of lands or titles, no schemes for coin or power.
His life had been a series of reactions: dodging Lady Stark's glares, matching Robb's swordplay, accepting the lesser seat.
The Watch had been escape, not ambition.
Now, with the power humming under his skin and these women gazing at him like he held the stars, the emptiness of it hit like cold wind through an open door.
What did he want, truly, beyond not being Snow?
What will Jon Say?

Truth of the Matter
Words DO mean something
A man or woman gains the power to speak things into reality: What they say, goes. Will they be responsible with this power? Will they use it to make the world a better place? Or will they change the world around them for their own pleasure?
