Who did you switch with?
Your dad, Donald Conners
"Your father, Donald..."
At the sound of that, everything else that the two men were saying, or attempting to talk to you about, went out the window as the simple fact that the man in your life, the head of your household, had been killed in the car accident and not only that, you were now supposedly in his body, to live his life and carry on as if nothing happened.
Saunders paused for a moment and then placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, Tim...it's not the easiest of news to deliver."
You sighed and nodded, refocusing your attention to them. The doctors explained the experimental nature of the procedure and having been confronted with your mangled body and your father's sudden aneurism that caused him to be brain dead. In a fear of losing both of you, the doctors had confronted your mom with the experimental operation and she had signed off on the hope that one of you would be returned to her: her son in her husband's body.
"How long was I o
Kerry looked at your records. "It's been touch and go for the past 3 weeks. Mostly because we weren't sure you'd even wake up. The CT scans and MRIs have told us that your brain from your original body has been received and acclimated with the rest of the functioning portion of your father's brain. Motor control, muscle memory, everything that ran your father's body is intact and working. The part that made you Tim, your true individual self as it were, is also intact. You will start to gain access to residual memories of your father that will make living his life easier for you from this point forward."
Saunders looked at you and watched your reaction as slowly you got up from the bed, with their help, and were slowly walked over to the attached restroom and you looked at your reflection in the mirror. You looked at your dad's tired and exhausted face staring back at you, though he was still rather a handsome man at 43 years of age. He was tall, 6'5", and though he pushed 240, most of it was in muscle and broad shoulders, arms, thighs, he was a stacked specimen of mature masculinity, versus your teenage body. It was strange to feel his skin, his face, the bristle from a five o'clock shadow and realize that this was YOUR skin, YOUR face, and was going to be from this point forward who you were to the outside world.
"Holy shit..." you whispered and the two doctors helped you back to the bed and after hooking you back up to the monitors, Saunders nodded. "This is really happening..."
"Yes, it was a success but at a cost. The hospital will be compensating you for this, as will the driver's insurance company from what I am hearing." Kerry motioned towards your temple. "The incision by your temple will fade away, eventually leaving a little scar that will be easily overlooked. Should be no more than a few months, tops."
You sighed and then looked at the two. "Besides Mom, who else knows?"
"That's it, your sister and brother don't know. She felt that they didn't need to know this if it were possible." Saunders looked at you. "You understand what that means?"
I'm going to have to be like dad in front of them, including relating to mom, you thought and after a few more minutes of discussing the NDA, you signed it and noticed how weird it was to see your dad's signature on the paper. It was a bit unsteady but it was definitely "Donald Conners".
Saunders slipped the paper into your folder and then gave a slight smile. "We've taken the liberty to calling your mom, Jennifer, to let her know you're awake. She'll be here in a few hours after dropping off your siblings at school."
"What do I talk with her about now?"
Kerry smirked. "I would imagine how you're going to be less of her child?"
Saunders glared at his colleague before turning back to you. "Why don't you first start with talking about how you two will relate to each other? The success of the operation has put you two in a unique position but she will need you as you will need her. Once you leave this hospital, your success will depend on each other."
What's next?
The Ultimate Transplant
Someone you know is given a new body & life
PLEASE ADD CHAPTERS! A close friend or family member is horribly injured in an accident. As they lay dying in the emergency room, another patient dies of a brain aneurysm. Both of them are organ donors, so a surgeon decides it's the perfect opportunity for him to try an experimental surgery. He transplants the victim's higher brain (the cerebellum) to the donor's body in an attempt to 'save' a life. Amazingly it works. But the surgery was not approved so the hospital convinces the families to keep quiet, arguing that revealing this operation to the public would bring never-ending media attention to all involved. That means that the patient will have to publicly assume the identity of the donor. What will this mean to your friends and family? Who else will you tell? Although you will spend a lot of time and effort giving support, how will all this alter your relationship to the patient? And how will he or she adapt to a complete change of body and identity? Many transformation stories focus on the change or victim, so I thought it would be interesting to instead have the POV be someone who sees the change from the outside. Writers feel free to explore a change in age, gender, class or ethnicity - and the repercussions that change would have on the main character (and others).
