Rivalry and Magical Humiliation at Augustine's Academy

A rivalry between two mages leads to mutually assured humiliation

Chapter 1 by Nobody123456789

The door to your dormitory chamber swung open before you even touched it, revealing a scene of calculated opulence. One half of the large, arcane-lit room was a vision of elitist perfection: grimoires floating in a precise orbit above a polished oak desk, a canopy bed draped in silks the color of winter sky, and the air smelling faintly of frozen water and ink.

Standing in the center of this perfection was Einamina Faimeni. Her long, silver-white hair seemed to defy the room's still air, flowing over her shoulders as she turned from a floating mirror of ice. Her eyes, sharp enough to cut glass, narrowed behind her spectacles as they landed on you.

"Ah. The... roommate." The word was a venomous sigh. "I had petitioned the administration for a private suite, as my bloodline and ranking obviously necessitate. It seems, however, they are determined to test my tolerance for... mediocrity."

Einamina gestured with a flick of her wrist to the other side of the room, which contained a simple, unadorned bed and a small wooden desk. It was starkly functional; unlike Einamina, you lacked the money to arrange for more sumptuous furnishings prior to your arrival.

"Let us establish the boundaries of this unfortunate arrangement immediately. This side," she said, sweeping her hand over her own space, "is mine. Do not cross this line." A thin, shimmering ribbon of cyan light etched itself into the stone floor, dividing the room perfectly. "Your aura is already contaminating the mana density. I shall have to increase my warding rituals." She adjusted her spectacles, looking you up and down as if examining a stain on her favorite gown.

"You will be silent during my study hours. You will not bring your... 'associates'... here. The scent of common races is difficult to purge. And you will under no circumstances touch, look at, or even think about my grimoires." She gestures overhead to the floating volumes, which you note with annoyance occupy 'your' side of the room above your head as well as hers.

"I do not know what connections or pity allowed your admission, but understand this: your presence in this academy is a statistical error. Your presence in my dormitory is a personal affront. I will be watching you. Fail a class, embarrass yourself in a practical, and I will be the first to recommend your expulsion. It's a disgrace that the academy has started allowing your kind in here."

With a final, dismissive flip of her hair, she turned her back away from you. "Now, do try to be quiet. Some of us are actual prodigies, with work to do."

You give the elf a flat look, and begin to unpack your belongings. Augustine Academy was founded by elvenkind, and though the passing of centuries has seen dwarves, dragonkin, and even orcs and humans successively admitted into its walls and rolls, a vocal minority of elven supremacists has persisted through all of it. As a human, and a common born one at that, you were prepared for a certain level of prejudice- you had hoped you might not have to suffer it from your roommate, however. As you sigh and begin the process of unpacking your belongings, Einamina scoffs audibly, her nose wrinkling as if she smelled something foul. She watches you through the reflection in her ice mirror, her cyan eyes following your every movement with a mix of disdain and barely concealed disgust.

"Tch, how quaint. I suppose that's the best a mongrel like you can manage?" she remarks, her voice dripping with condescension as she eyes the collection of burlap sacks and leather satchels which hold your worldly belongings. "Tell me, is whatever collection of hovels you hail from too impoverished to afford proper extradimensional storage containers, or are you just too primitive to know how to use them?"

She turns away from the mirror, her silken robes swishing softly as she crosses her arms under her ample bosom."I must warn you, I have a very keen nose. The scent of your human blood is already assaulting my senses. I will expect you to keep your possessions on your side of the room, to minimize the assault on my senses."

You grit your teeth, trying to ignore her taunts. Focus on your studies, not your feuds, your master’s voice echoes in your head. Master Phaedrus wasn’t a particularly wealthy or powerful wizard, but he took you in as his own after your parents died and taught you all he knew before sending you here to learn what he didn’t. The old man had to call in a lot of favors to get you here, you can’t squander that by getting in stupid fights.

As she speaks, Einamina begins to levitate an intricately carved wooden box inlaid with spellforms of various precious metals, her slender fingers tracing the delicate patterns etched into the grain and strips of metal. She hums softly, a tuneless melody with a peculiar rhythm, and as she runs a finger along a strip of platinum on the box's side a softly glowing cyan warding line comes into existence dividing the room in two- not equally either, you notice with annoyance. Einamina has given herself easily two thirds of the space.

Again, you grit your teeth as she laughs haughtily as you bring out your school supplies- leatherbound journals filled with your own notes and Phaedrus’s cramped, spidery handwriting, simple goosefeather quill pens, rather than the enchanted ones more common among the mage-aristocracy. "Oh, so you can read- I suppose even the current inclusion-obsessed administration hasn't lowered their standards that much yet"

She sets the box down on her desk, the movement precise and deliberate, before turning back to face you. Her gaze is sharp, her lips curled into a smirk that dares you to challenge her.

"I trust you understand the gravity of the opportunity you've been given, mongrel. Do not squander it. And do not, for a single moment, forget your place. You are beneath me. You are not one of us. You are... an exception. A temporary allowance. Prove yourself worthy of this chance, and perhaps, just perhaps, you may not embarrass yourself entirely."

With that, Einamina turns away from you once more, leaving you to continue your unpacking in a thick atmosphere of barely concealed disdain and arrogance. It's clear that she sees you as little more than a target for abuse to reinforce the superiority of her and her kind.

As Einamina Faimeni leaves the room, her silken robes billowing behind her, you're left alone in the unnatural stillness of the dormitory. The stones of the floor feel cold and unwelcoming beneath your feet.

You turn your attention back to your belongings, the mundane act of unpacking suddenly feeling more daunting in the face of her departure. Each item you remove from your pack feels heavier. All of a sudden, just unpacking feels like an act of defiance, like with each notebook and set of underwear you stow you're claiming ground she would deny you .

The dividing line etched into the floor pulses with a faint, cyan light, a reminder of the boundary that exists to contain you, to keep you separate from your new roommate's section of your shared space.

As you continue to unpack, the silence grows more oppressive, the weight and insult of Einamina's words settling uneasily like a sharp stone in your gut. The pressure to prove yourself, to rise above the expectations of mediocrity and failure, hangs heavy in the air. It's a challenge, a gauntlet thrown down by a girl who sees you as nothing more than a rival to be crushed beneath her heel. You decide in that moment that a little payback is in order- if she wants to see you humiliated, then it's only fair play to return the favor.
