Continuing the journey

Chapter 3 by Lovelylift Lovelylift

The bus continued to roll along the winding roads, its occasional vibrations shifting Rashid slightly in his sleep. Still holding him on her feet, Salma felt Rashid’s weight increase slightly; it was as if his deeper sleep had loosened his muscles. She carefully placed her hand under Rashid’s shoulders to steady him, but the cramped space between the seats did not allow for much movement. An unconscious smile crept onto her lips; the situation, which had begun as a desperate one, had now turned into something warm and intimate.

Noor, who was sitting next to them, noticed Rashid slipping slightly in his sleep. “Salma, he’s getting too heavy for you. Let me help move him,” she whispered in a low, concerned voice.

Salma shook her head and said softly, “No, he’s fine. He’s sleeping soundly. "Just... if the next stop comes, we have to wake him up." But in her heart, that maternal care had grown stronger. She moved her legs a little so that Rashid could sit better, and tightened her arm around his waist so that he wouldn't fall.

Suddenly the bus jumped over a large bump. Rashid rolled in his sleep and almost slipped over Salma's legs. Reacting quickly, Salma wrapped her strong arm around his waist and lifted him up—an involuntary but effective move. Rashid, still half asleep, hung in Salma's arms for a moment, his head resting on her shoulder. With her physical strength gained from years of housework and life, Salma gently pulled him up and set him back on his feet, but closer this time, so that his chest was pressed against Rashid's.

Rashid's eyes were half-open, confused and tired. "What... what happened?" he murmured, his snoring having stopped.

Salma said with a soft laugh, “It was a bump. You almost fell. Now go back to sleep, hero.” She ran her hand through Rashid’s hair, like a mother caressing her child.

Noor, who had been watching the scene with wide eyes, laughed and said, “Wow, Salma, you’re stronger than I thought! It’s like you lifted Rashid like a baby.” She placed her hand on Salma’s shoulder, her former jealousy now completely transformed into admiration.

Rashid, still in the throes of sleep, rested his head on Salma’s chest again and murmured, “Thank you… it’s easier this way.” And he fell back asleep. Salma held him tighter this time, wrapping her legs around Rashid’s waist a little to make him more stable. The bus continued on, but in this small corner, a new bond had formed – Salma as the strong supporter, Rashid as the tired one who had given up, and Noor, with a grateful smile, carving this moment into her heart.
