Chapter 6 by pad03 pad03

Does she catch it in time?

She does

Being on-edge proved to be a blessing and a curse, as her heightened reflexes allowed her to reach out and catch the music box in both hands before it shattered against the floorboards below. She slowly craned her head forward to look out of the closet doors, towards the prowling zombie. Luckily, it was too focused on the feminine screaming outside to notice the faint thudding of Annette's clumsiness earlier.

Crisis averted.

Annette exhaled slowly, a few beads of sweat trailing down her face. Luck continued to shine on the woman as the rotten intruder did not stick around long. Despite not checking the entirety of the building, the limited attention span of the undead led it back outside towards the earlier shriek.

The Priestess would remain hidden inside the closet for about an hour longer, not wanting to chance leaving her hiding spot too early and running straight back into the creature outside. She felt sick, both from the lingering stench of the zombie and the elevated heart rate that she struggled to calm, but the cooling night air flowing in through the broken door was a welcome sensation.

Trapped with her thoughts, Annette pondered her next moves. On one hand, she felt a duty to the town, if even one person was still alive down there, then her responsibility was to protect them with her healing abilities. On the other hand, she was terrified of the unholy creatures attacking. Their appearance was the stuff of nightmares and she knew that she stood no chance against them if they caught her in the open. Annette thought back to what she overheard the guard captain say to his underlings, following an ill-advised cornering of a dire-wolf, that later landed a bunch of them into the chapel for healing.

She could still remember the captain's gruff voice as he disciplined the men.

"Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer..."

Annette shut her eyes and shook her head. She had to escape. Her fleeting luck would quickly pass - staying in Farfield would be suicide.

Stepping lightly, Annette began to slide the closet door open and make her way out, over the mess of the broken door and into the forest...

What now?
