Chapter 30 by Duskford Duskford

What's the source of the noise? Is it a person or an animal?

Jennifer, the forest ranger

Zack continued rubbing Heather’s feet, but he got his head away from it as the noises intensified and a woman came out from behind the trees. She was fully dressed in the forest rangers’ uniform, but he could see that she was quite beautiful.

He wasn’t sure about the length of her blonde hair, since it was hidden underneath her hat, but her eyes were of a bluish grey color and she had a very fit and toned body, which Zack chalked up to her being a ranger.

“What’s going on here?” The ranger asked, an authoritative tone on her voice that broke Heather from her stupor. “Great, another couple who thought that the woods would be a nice place to have some fun.”

Zack blinked twice in confusion. “Uhn, it’s not like that.”

The ranger rolled her eyes up. “Oh, of course not, you looked like you were about to gobble her foot down your mouth, young man,” She said, sarcastically. “How old are you two, anyway?”

Zack looked embarrassed while Heather smirked at him before turning to the ranger. “We’re eighteen, Jennifer.”

The ranger stared at Heather for a few seconds, then her expression softened. “Heather Ravers, I didn’t recognize you, you know?” She walked over to them. “It’s been a little more than two years since you last came here.”

Seeing Zack's bewildered look, Heather explained. “About two years ago I became lost in these trails and Jennifer rescued me. She had just become a ranger at the time.”

“I remember having to calm her down while the car was coming to pick us up.” Jennifer, the ranger said. “And now you’re here again with your boyfriend.”

Heather smirked again. “Oh, Zack’s not my boyfriend.” She said, laughing. “We’re here with five more friends and my cousin Kurt. Then I decided to come here to check up the trails before bringing them hiking.”

“Wise decision,” Jennifer agreed, looking like she didn’t believe that Zack wasn’t Heather’s boyfriend. “But you could’ve come to me instead, I would’ve told you about the trails’ condition.”

“Yeah, I forgot,” Heather said, looking sheepishly at the ranger. “I do it now, then. How are the trails?”

Jennifer looked around before answering. “Well, they’re mostly fine, we do what we can to take care of everything in this area.” She said. “There have just been a few bear sightings near the cave recently.”

“I’ll make sure to steer clear from there then. Thanks, Jen.” Heather thanked the ranger, briefly hugging her. “Now I think that we can go back to the cabin, Zack. I already know what I wanted to.”

“I hope you remember the way back.” Zack remarked with a grin.

Heather looked indignantly as Jennifer smiled. “I have you know that I know these trails like the back of my hand.” She shot back. “I lost myself that day ‘cause I wandered into a trail that I didn’t know.”

“Now kids, you don’t need to fight.” Jennifer chimed in. “I’ll go with you to make sure you get back to the Ravers Cabin safely.”

Zack watched as Heather and Jennifer talked on the entire way back. He noticed that she actually was a very nice person to be around, he learned that her last name was White, she was 28 years old and she was on her third year as a forest ranger at that area. She teased him a couple more times about being Heather’s boyfriend, which made him flush.

A little less than thirty minutes later they reached the edge of Silver Lake and saw Heather’s cabin. Jennifer looked at it with admiration.

“Your family’s cabin is one of the nicest ones around here, Heather.” She complimented. “Take good care of it.”

“I will,” Heather smiled. “Thanks for walking us back, Jen.”

“You’re welcome,” The ranger returned the smile before looking at the lake. “Now I have to go back to the station, behave you two.” She turned before adding. “Don’t go having sex in dangerous places!”

Heather laughed as Zack stared with embarrassment at the retreating ranger.

“That’s a funny character, that Jennifer.” Zack stated.

“Yeah, she is,” Heather agreed. “Now let’s go back in.”

What happens on the rest of the afternoon?
