Going to the planet possessing the Star Child, Nimrod was immediately met with a cornucopia of blades and bastards.

First and foremost, it was Chaos on the world, then Imperial defenders, then an emerging Necron scourge. With his Imperial fleet and personal forces, Nimrod used his sorcery to pinpoint daemon gateways, joining the Imperials as they took down Chaos and suppressed Necron awakening zones or let them come out in heavily infested enemy territory. Each pillar helped greatly in this war; the Assassins Pillar took out key targets and drove fear into daemon ranks, the Battle Pillar led the armies and forward assaults, the Exploration Pillar moved Imperials and requisitioned forces to aid in the war, the Spouse Pillar kept everyone in line and gathered the mutants, the Guerilla Pillar handled all forms of battle outside of empty terrain, and the Fleet Pillar used Nimrod's ships (unrestrained by Mechanicum rules) to jump in and out of the battlefield at different spots, obliterating enemy fleets and raining orbital hell.

The Emperor's orders were intense, but Nimrod knew he held out long enough to get to the Star Child, getting into a big battle with various forces to secure the Star Child, eventually having the Emperor teleport him directly into the throne room, but with the Star Child.

With the Star Child by his side, the Emperor absorbed the little shit, causing a heartbeat to sing across the throne room. The Emperor then moved to Nimrod, sucking the life out of Nimrod as he felt his existence being added to the Emperor's form in hopes of creating a new shard. Although not completely right, Nimrod was on the money, knowing that his becoming one of the Emperor's shards would be the end of him. As for why, besides the power boost, Nimrod had to assume it was the Emperor's way of removing him from the great plan spanning 10,000 years, a long play to see Chaos beaten.
