The moment Diego left Chase’s house, he felt like he was suffocating. The late afternoon sun felt heavy on his skin, the familiar street outside oppressive, alien. Every detail he had just witnessed replayed in his mind: his mom’s soft, obedient movements, the affectionate way she spoke to Chase, the glow in her eyes as she carried out mundane chores as though they were the most meaningful tasks in her life.

He staggered home, dropping onto his bed, hands gripping the sheets. He opened his laptop again, fingers shaking as he typed faster than ever:

The search results were frustratingly general. Case studies of cult indoctrination, behavioral psychology experiments, subliminal conditioning, even military experiments—nothing concrete, nothing that told him how to reverse it. Nothing addressed that his mother could now feel affection for the man who had reshaped her entire life.

Diego leaned back, blinking at the ceiling, stomach twisting. She looked at him like… like she loved him. And it’s my fault for letting it happen. I couldn’t protect her.

He closed his eyes, trying to picture his mother as she once was—assertive, confident, the woman who had raised him, lectured him, hugged him when he needed it. But that image felt thin, fragile. In comparison, the memory of Valerie—the soft-spoken, radiant, devoted maid—loomed impossibly real, almost tactile.

He couldn’t sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her hands dusting shelves, heard her soft Spanish humming, saw that quiet smile she reserved for Chase.

Chase, meanwhile, monitored him through the house’s systems. The boy’s panic, the obsessive research, the mounting frustration—it was all visible on the feeds. Chase allowed himself a quiet chuckle. Diego was spiraling, but he was spiraling into the trap Chase had already laid.

Over the next few days, Chase began layering subtle reinforcements. Every session with Valerie focused not only on obedience and domestic pride but also on the warmth, the gratitude, the affection she was meant to feel toward him.

“You see, Valerie,” he murmured one afternoon as she folded laundry, “he worries. He doesn’t understand. But you know I’ve given you a life worth having. A purpose. Don’t you feel… something for me? Something that isn’t just gratitude, but… admiration?”

Her cheeks flushed faintly. “Sí… señor…”

He leaned back, letting her words settle, watching her entire posture relax into devotion. Every gesture, every tone reinforced the fantasy he had sculpted for her—and every flicker of hesitation Diego might have caught was erased before it could surface.

Diego, isolated in his own research and observations, became more frantic. He tried bringing up stories from the past, asking in English about her life as Dr. Valeria. She would glance at him, eyes bright, tilting her head, and respond in soft Spanish:

“Dieguito… no entiendo. Eso no soy yo.”

And Chase, silently observing, allowed the boy’s panic to feed itself. Every attempt Diego made to reclaim Valeria only confirmed to him that he owned her loyalty, that she chose him in every way that mattered.
