What's next?
Diego tries harder to free her
Diego waited until the next evening, when the golden light of sunset spilled into the small living room, and Valerie had just returned from Chase’s house. She carried the laundry basket with the same serene precision she had for weeks, humming softly in Spanish as she set it down.
Diego swallowed hard, chest tight. This is it. I have to try. I can’t let him—this man—keep her like this.
“Mom,” he began, voice shaking. “We need to talk.”
Valerie paused, folding a towel, and looked at him with gentle eyes, smiling faintly. “Dieguito… ¿qué pasa?”
Diego’s stomach twisted. The Spanish. She won’t even speak English to me.
“I… I know something’s wrong,” he said, holding up one of the old photos he’d managed to keep hidden. “I know… Chase has been controlling you somehow. You’re not… you’re not really happy. This isn’t you.”
Valerie tilted her head, brows furrowed slightly in innocent confusion. “Dieguito… yo estoy bien. Muy bien. Gracias a él…” Her voice softened, almost reverent. “Él me da todo… me cuida, me enseña, me protege…”
<I'm fine. Very fine. Thanks to him… He gives me everything… he takes care of me, he teaches me, he protects me...>
Diego’s heart slammed. “Mom, no! He’s manipulating you! This isn’t real! You were a doctor, you had your life, your friends—don’t you remember?”
Valerie stepped closer, folding her hands over the basket, her eyes gentle but unwavering. “Dieguito… yo soy Valerie ahora. Yo trabajo. Yo cuido. Yo sirvo. Y él me ayuda.”
<I am Valerie now. I work. I care. I serve. And he helps me.>
Diego’s hands shook. “But—he’s lying to you! He’s—he’s been brainwashing you!”
Her voice dropped, soft but firm, almost protective. “No. Yo elegí esto. Él me da seguridad… me da propósito. ¿Por qué quieres que deje de agradecerle?”
<No. I chose this. He gives me security… He gives me purpose. Why do you want me to stop thanking him?>
Diego froze. Did she just… defend him?
Valerie stepped even closer, her hand brushing his arm lightly in a gesture that was meant to reassure, yet pierced him with terror. “Dieguito… no quiero lastimarte. Pero él es bueno conmigo. Él me da todo lo que necesito. Y… yo lo quiero.”
<I don’t want to hurt you. But he’s good to me. He gives me everything I need. And… I love him.>
Diego stumbled backward, shock and fear rooting him to the spot. “Mom… you—you love him?!”
Her gaze softened even further. “Sí… sí, Dieguito. Lo admiro. Lo respeto. Lo quiero… él me salvó.”
<Yes… yes, Diego. I admire him. I respect him. I love him… he saved me.>
Diego felt the room tilt, a crushing weight pressing down on him. His mother—the woman he knew—was gone. Replaced by someone who chose the man who had orchestrated her entire erasure, and now loved him for it.
He opened his mouth, **** to argue, to **** her to remember, but her next words cut through him, calm and resolute:
“Dieguito… confía en mí. Esto es lo mejor. Él me cuida. Él me enseña. Él me guía. Y yo lo necesito.”
<Dieguito… trust me. This is the best. He takes care of me. He teaches me. He guides me. And I need him.>
Diego staggered back, chest heaving. He realized then that no amount of evidence, no photograph, no argument could reach her. She had been conditioned to defend Chase—not just obey him, but protect him in her heart.
From his safe vantage at Chase’s monitors, the man leaned back, a thin, satisfied smile tracing his lips. Diego’s desperation, his frantic energy, only confirmed to him that the plan had succeeded. Every subtle reinforcement of loyalty, every planted shred of affection, every layer of hypnotic suggestion had taken root.
Valerie, glowing with quiet pride in her work, no longer recognized Diego as the son trying to reclaim her. To her, he was simply a boy she guided and cared for, grateful for the man who had given her a life she now embraced with her whole being.
Chase murmured to himself: “See? The real test of control isn’t obedience—it’s love. And now, Diego… there’s nothing you can do."
