Chapter 12 by Duskford Duskford

What happens in the morning?

Zack wanders around with Heather

In the morning Zack awoke to a bright light streaming from the window, he supposed that Victoria had opened the curtains at some point. Speaking of the blonde, she was nowhere to be seen. Sighing, Zack blinked a few times to get used to the light and moved to a sitting position.

He saw that Victoria really wasn’t in the room and judging by the silence in the bathroom, he assumed she wasn’t there either. Zack wanted to talk to her as soon as possible to properly sort out their relationship. Even after what happened on the previous night, he didn’t want to assume that she was automatically his girlfriend.

Standing up, he went to the wardrobe to retrieve a change of clothes before going to the bathroom to take a shower. After a shower filled with thoughts of Victoria, he quickly dried himself and went back to the bedroom. He put on his watch that was showing 9:37 A.M..

”I thought I would sleep more.”

He exited the room and walked to the main section of the cabin. There, the only person that he found was Heather, strangely wearing a pair of hiking boots. She was leaning on the kitchen counter sulking but her face brightened when she saw Zack.

“Morning.” He said with a small smile.

“Morning, Zack,” She greeted back, walking over to him. “I hope that you slept well, ‘cause you’re coming outside with me.”

“I am?” Zack shot back, puzzled.

Heather nodded excitedly. “I’m planning to take you guys hiking tomorrow, but I want to see first if the trails are in good condition.” She explained. “I need one of the guys to come with me and you’re the only one available.”

“Where are the others?” Zack asked with curiosity as he sat down to eat breakfast.

“Kurt and Brandon haven’t waked up yet and you know that Gavin isn’t fit enough for a quick run outside.” Heather answered. “As for the girls, they are holed up in my room talking.”

“Aren’t you sharing a room with Gavin?” Zack asked while he ate.

“Yeah, the girls kicked him out to the deck, look.” Heather pointed to the deck, where Zack could indeed see his friend sleeping on one of the lounging chairs. “Okay, I’ll get my stuff ready, Zack. Once you finish your breakfast, get your stuff and join me at the lake, please?”

Zack nods, his mouth full. Heather went to her room and after a while, Zack finished eating and returned to his. He changed his sandals to a pair of hiking boots, got his backpack and filled with things that he thought he could need. He got out on the deck to notice that the sun was shining brightly that morning.

”And hotly too.” He thought, feeling himself beginning to sweat.

He joined Heather by the dock and they began to walk over by the right side of Silver Lake, to a path that led them into the woods. While they walked, Zack found out that Heather was quite fun and pleasant to be around. It surprised him that even after two years of friendship with the cheerleader captain, he didn’t really know her much well. He could count on the fingers of one hand the times they had been alone, every other time there was at least one of their friends with them.

After she laughed at something he had said, Heather smirked at him. “So Zack, tell me something that I’m really curious about, what’s the deal with you and Chloe?”

“What do you mean by deal?” Zack shot back, puzzled.

Heather rolled her eyes up. “Guys,” She muttered. “Are you guys fucking or, I don’t know, plan to?”

Zack snorted, now that was something funny. “I don’t know from where you came up with it, but Chloe is like a sister to me.”

“You guys could’ve fooled me and a lot of people.” Heather said. “You two are always together, I almost asked Chloe directly but I got too embarrassed.”

“I never thought that way about Chloe, like I said she’s like a sister to me.” Zack stated, wondering where these questions were coming from.

“Do you know how many girls wanted to go out with you but didn’t said anything ‘cause they thought you and Chloe were an item?” Heather asked, grinning at him.

Zack laughed hard at that, if Chloe knew that she was unintentionally cock-blocking him, she would really get a kick out of it as well.

“What?”

“It’s just that Chloe would almost kill herself laughing if you tell her that.” Zack smiled.

Heather returned his smile. Zack felt he was betraying Victoria but he took a quick look at Heather at that moment. She had beautiful electric blue eyes, her long hair were from a deep dark shade of brown that almost looked totally black to him. Her body was fit and toned due to her cheerleading and her shirt covered breasts rivaled Chloe’s in size.

“So does that mean that you’re available?” Heather asked with a pretty smile.

That question made Zack stop in his tracks. ”Wait a sec, Heather’s interested in me?”

He was saved from answering by a faint sound of running water he heard. He looked back at Heather.

“Running water, must be a stream!” He said, breaking into a run on the direction that he thought he had heard the sound of water. “Let’s check it out!”

“Wait for me, Zack!” He heard Heather yelling behind him.

After a few seconds running, he reached the small stream of water he heard. It was shallow, so the only uses they could have for it would be to fill their bottles and wash their hands. However, Heather walked over to the stream and began to untie the laces of her boots.

“Let’s rest here for a bit, Zack.” She said, pulling off her boots. “I need to cool off my feet.”

Zack watched then as she sat down on the border and dipped her feet in the water. That action brought Zack’s attention to her fantastic dancer legs. They were long and smooth, seeming to go on forever until they disappeared inside her jean shorts.

He was broke of his trance by a noise in the bushes behind them. The two of them looked around to check the noise’s source.

What do they see there? Is it another person or is it an animal?

So, person or animal?
