The long walk

It is hard going, and by the time she reaches Vedermark, she can barely feel her legs. Though that is not much of a change.

On the walk, she’s come to realise she’s making the right choice. She knows that she’ll find no judgment or scorn amongst her sisters of the Matron, only love and compassion, and pity. And if pity is the price to pay for protection, and help with whatever is to come, then she’ll pay it.

She stumbles as she approaches the gates of Vedermark, dropping to her knees in the pale morning light. A wide-eyed guardsman rushes over to her, his face a mask of concern and shock. She barely registers what he’s saying, and doesn’t know what she’s mumbling either.

The next thing she knows, she is bundled in his cloak, just her small battered feet and scarlet mane visible as the tall Human lifts her into his arms, hurrying through the opening gate.
