Chapter 14

What Does Sarah Do?
Speak With Corporal Cho
The Corporal seems to be in the midst of of taking inventory, in her hands she grips a clipboard as she looks over a sheet of scrap metal that holds several pistols, the sidearms that USCM marines are to carry at all times, along with a single magazine.
It appears these sidearms are all that the crew had managed to save from the ship, judging by the armory or lack there of, the contents of the armory are long gone now.
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} Thankfully due to Sarah and Cruz’s efforts they had managed to rescue a small portion of armaments and equipment before the Warden crashed. {endif}
“Corporal..? Do you have a moment?” Asks Sarah as she steps over, prompting Cho to turn her head, dropping her clipboard into the sand near the marines meager arsenal.
“Oh, hey Sarge… yeah I got time, only so many ways to count a handful of Service Pistols…” says Cho as she gestures to the weapons.
“Not looking good, huh..?” Asks Sarah, half jokingly as she scoops up one of the pistols, inspecting it slowly.
Despite the lackluster variety, each service pistol is polished to a perfect sheen, as good as if it had just come into service to a bright eyed young recruit.
“Sarge, we best get on our knees and thank the lord that no scavengers have rolled up yet, shit we can’t even outgun a local marshals office.” She laments as she turns to gaze out at the rocky outcropping, as though waiting for said scavengers to peek their heads out any moment.
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “I know where we can get some weapons… real weapons…” says Sarah causing Cho’s eye brow to raise in interest. {endif}
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “If you’re thinking about checking the armory, you’re out of luck there. The whole armory got ripped out during the crash, all those guns, ammo and equipment if it isn’t beyond repair then it’s buried under 5lbs of sand or lost down some gorge… nothing to be done about it.” She says with a sigh. {endif}
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “Before the crash Cruz and I managed to rescue some gear, it’s not perfect, plenty of people will have to go without but at least we won’t be fighting off scavs with peashooters.” Explains Sarah, drawing the quartermaster’s interest with each word. {endif}
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “Interesting… and… where exactly did you say all this was..? I sure as hell didn’t find anything like that…” Asks Cho, hands on her hips as she looks past the Sargent to gaze at the husk of the Warden. {endif}
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “It’s all in the APC, I’d have brought it myself if I didn’t have to carry Cruz into camp… hell, maybe we could even rescue the APC… assuming we can bring Cruz back from the dead…” {endif}
{if PFC Cruz Is Alive = 1} “Alright… I can see if I can’t get some people together… I’d need you to join of course… I couldn’t even see the APC when we left the Warden behind..” she says, glancing across camp at the potential members of this cohort. {endif}
“And how are you holding up..? Inventory aside… I can’t imagine any of this is easy on you…” Being a quartermaster is stressful at the best of time.
Every time some dipshit rookie damages his gun, the quartermaster has to deal with it, every time the kitchen needs to restock on prefab meals, the quartermaster has to deal with it, and now the ship has fallen, the armory is gone and everyone is running low on everything a rifle squad needs to survive and operate.
A guilty look crosses Cho’s face, her eyes flick between Sarah’s face and the side before finally she responds. “To be honest with you Sarge… I’ve been waiting for something like this… all that waiting… all that bullshit of making sure everyone has a comfy pillow and porno mags… it’s worse then taking a bullet to me… this..? This is what I signed on for…”
Sarah had met marines like this before, marines that have seen real action and can’t adjust to a cosy recruiter position or retirement, it’s enough to drive some folk crazy, odds are, if things kept up the way they did much longer Cho would have cracked at the seams.
“Well… looks like you got your wish, there’ll be a lot of action before we get off planet.. that much I can promise.” Says Sarah, turning back to the wreck of the Warden, looming over the area like the skeleton of some great beast.
Sarah breaks off from Corporal Cho as she begins preparations to brave the wreckage one last time to salvage the remains of the Wardens armory.
