Feather and Flame

Warning: **** Owlbear Cruelty

The owlbear had heard us.

It came stomping through the opening, massive and furious, its beaked maw opening wide as it let out a bone-shaking wail. Its fur and feathers bristled like a stormcloud come alive, mottled with dirt and dried blood. Its eyes locked on Lae’zel first.

Before she could react, it slammed into her with terrifying speed. The **** sent her flying through the air like a ragdoll, crashing hard against the stone wall with a metallic thud.

I didn’t think. I fired—a dual Eldritch Blast snapped forward, striking it square in the cheek. It reeled slightly, but didn’t slow. The hit barely registered.

Shadowheart darted toward Lae’zel, muttering a prayer under her breath as divine light healed broken flesh and bone. The owlbear turned to me, eyes burning, and swiped a hooked claw with terrifying speed.

I threw up my shield just in time. The magic woven into it shimmered, warping the angle of the hit. It still connected—hard—but the blow glanced off just enough to drive me to my knees. I wouldn't survive another hit like that

Lae’zel, now back on her feet, let out a battle cry. She rushed forward, unleashing a double-strike with a fluid, brutal rhythm that made the owlbear stagger back. Shadowheart caught my arm and healed me quickly, her eyes wide.

"What did you get on your level up?" I asked through a gasp.

"Fireball," she said, eyes narrowing. "A big one."

That wouldn't be enough damage. We need to hurt it more.

The owlbear let out another roar and lunged. Lae’zel stepped in its path, blocking with a grunt and buying me a heartbeat of time.

I had a wild thought.

Fire… feathers…

I peeled off my gloves and sprinted straight at the beast. As it raised a claw, I ducked under and slapped my palm to its side, right inbetween the feathers—skin to skin.

Curse of Trembling Skin

A flash of pink burst where I touched, a swirling heart symbol, created to fit the gentle skin of soft curves, was glowing awkwardly against its rage-filled body.

It let out a strange noise—half screech, half moan.

Lae’zel and Shadowheart both stared at me, wide-eyed and speechless—caught somewhere between confusion, disbelief, and a dawning sense that teaming up with me might have been a questionable decision.

"SHADOWHEART, NOW!" I roared.

She raised a hand and hurled the fireball.

The cavern exploded with heat and light as the fireball struck the owlbear squarely. The curse I’d laid on it moments earlier bloomed in full—its skin now hypersensitive, nerves screaming with every flicker of heat. The flames didn’t just burn; they tortured.

It howled, a distorted, ragged sound of panic and agony, its massive form thrashing wildly. The fire caught its feathers and clung like oil, spreading faster than it could think. The pain drove it mad—so overwhelming it couldn’t focus, couldn’t aim, couldn’t do anything but try to get away. It rolled, slammed into rock, pawed at the scorched earth. But the flame stayed.

The cavern filled with the **** stench of burning feathers. Its movements slowed… then stopped.

Silence.

[Experience Gained]

Shadowheart stood frozen, shocked to her core. Stunned. "What the hells…"

Lae’zel’s mouth hung open as she stared between me and the scorched corpse. Slowly, she nodded.

"That was... efficient," she said. Then louder, with growing admiration, "Incredible use of timing and power. Ruthless. Perfect"

[Lae’zel: Approval +5]

I smiled weakly, heart still hammering. I was alive—but gods, that had to be illegal.

We gathered the loot, shared a few stunned glances, and decided to setup in the cave. We’d earned it.
