Postmodernism

Industrialisation progressed and with it society changed and evolved. As ever, pet girls were at the forefront of it all. Increased urbanism brought hundreds of thousands into the cities, most of them only passingly familiar with city culture such as pet dressing or the increasingly common agnesian pet girls that filled the administrations of businesses and governments alike.

In the countryside, old practices such as wedding rings and a traditional view of women still persisted. There, women were hardworking people almost equal but still subservient to their husbands. So the transition to the strange customs of the city folk seemed strange to the former peasants who flocked to the new factories.

Still, they adapted. Whether it was due to social pressure or the sheer need to find employment. To survive in the city, a family needed two incomes and the only work a women could find was in the administration, where it was expected of them to dress and act like agnesian pets.

The views on women underwent a radical transformation. While up till this point old Christian teachings on the virtue of the laborious peasant wife dominated most of the population aside from the small aristocracy, now the new agnesian view dominated. Where most commoner women lived a life very similar to their husbands, performing hard physical work in the fields or the house, now it became unseemly for women to perform non-mental work.

Women, who had always been considered lesser in every respect except maybe their appearance in the patriarchal views of christendom, were now elevated to being considered the smarter of the two sexes. That said, their role remained strictly subservient.

In the words of a famous philosopher of the time.

"We women might think up the future of humanity, but it is up to the men to decide upon it."

Things continued on this trajectory until the world wars.

Suddenly, there were no more men to perform the physical labor required to keep the war economies of Europe running. So the women, who had almost entirely entered the administrative side as agnesian pet girls had to pick up the slack.

This largely reversed the trend of pettification among the female population of the warring countries and led to women's emancipation movements which swept across the continent and even the United States.

The result of which was a diversification of the paths which were available to women. The first world war had ended the institution of aristocracy in Europe, breaking the monopoly on pet wifes. Which meant that many of those who had previously stopped at pet dressing due to enforced laws, now adopted the lifestyle entirely. The life of an agnesian pet girl, a working pet, remained widespread as well. On the other hand, now there were emancipated women who simply lived their lives as equals to men, though pet dressing and the prevalence of collars as signifiers of marriage did blurr the lines.
