What's next?
Coffee with Mel
“Morning,” Mel sighed happily as she sank into the chair across from me at my kitchen table, wrapping her hands around the mug of coffee I had ready for her.
“Morning,” I smiled softly. “What’s up? You look like you hate this particular morning even more than most.”
“Nothing,” she shook her head, then snorted softly and smirked. “You’ve got my daughter grilling me and Dan about every battle you’ve ever run in the Game.”
That made me bark a laugh and shake my head. “She’s doing her research, huh?”
Mel gave me a look and then started laughing as well. “She’s rented several books on medieval warfare from the public library, too. Not to mention she’s been watching a bunch of medieval action movies, and the girls were over at our place last night doing a Lord of the Rings marathon.”
“Not a whole lot of great battle tactics in those movies,” I chuckled after taking a sip of my coffee. “Maybe a little better than Game of Thrones, but not by much.”
Melissa rolled her eyes at me and shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t know how you did it - Rhia’s kept me up to date on what’s been happening and I know I’d be wanting to kill this werewolf guy too, but they are going the extra mile.”
“First big villain,” I pointed out.
“Oh, come on,” she shrugged. “We didn’t hate - fuck, what was his name? Ultgar the Terrible?”
“Uthgar,” I corrected. “Bane of the Blackrock Tors, high bishop of Agony.”
“Right, him,” Mel nodded.
I laughed a very particular, very annoying, laugh. It was something between a cawing crow, a laugh, and a super annoying and entitled personality all wrapped up into one objectively grating sound. “Haw-haw-haw-haw.”
“Oh my God,” Melissa said, her eyes going wide and pointing at me as she was reminded auditorily of memories from twenty years ago. “Never mind, I take it back. Fuck that guy.”
I grinned. That laugh had haunted the earliest version of The Game from before we ever even got sexual. In fact, it was during the aftermath of Uthgar the Terrible’s defeat and the subsequent triumphant return to the city that the group had done their first ‘public baths’ trip when Melissa had convinced everyone to get naked for the first time.
“You really are fucking good at DMing,” Melissa sighed, taking another long sip of her coffee.
“Thanks,” I chuckled. It was an off-week for The Game, but I’d already started work on their next session post-sex as their party was closing in on the Dark Lord’s back lines in the war. Next week was going to be interesting.
“You’re also apparently ‘a fucking Sex God,’” Melissa smirked over the edge of her coffee cup.
I groaned softly, hearing the air quotes around those words.
“Yeah,” she said. “Apparently now that the girls know me and Dan are long-term nerdy freaks, they’re a lot less worried about being overheard in their own banter and sex talk.”
“Oh boy,” I sighed.
“So you’ve fucked Tori now too, huh?”
There was no point in denying it or fudging the facts for the sake of propriety. “Mhmm,” I hummed and nodded.
“How was it?” Mel asked. “I mean, she seems to think it was the best sex she’s ever had, but I doubt that’s a huge pool of experience. Not that you aren’t capable, but ‘best sex’ on the first try before you’ve really gotten to know her buttons?”
“It was great, and I’d say I was at… a seven and a half out of ten,” I said. “I could have used more time to really- well, you know. And there’s blunt sexual chemistry, but knowing more about her would boost it up. Plus I almost lost my fucking cool a little early because it was our first time and-”
“And she’s fucking stupid gorgeous,” Mel chuckled.
“Yeah,” I laughed.
“So Rhia’s the only one left, huh?” she asked. “Is it going to happen next week?”
I gulped a little at the question because the context that would fill out the details around it was pretty dense. ‘Are you going to fuck my daughter next week?’ was quite the question.
“Rhia and I haven’t done anything yet,” I confirmed. “And unless she springs something unexpected on me, probably not next week, no. Big castle battle, remember?”
Mel gave me a look, one that I realised Rhia would also give me sometimes. One that said I was underestimating their cunning, but they didn’t want to tell me that. I’d learned to read it on Mel years ago and had never told her about that little tell, and seeing it on her now I pieced together that her daughter had picked up that little habit.
“Well, I’m excited to hear what happens with the battle,” Mel said. “I’m sure you’ll make it as memorable as always.”
“That’s the goal,” I smiled.
The conversation pivoted to other life stuff, our usual fare for our morning coffees. News about folks, some light gossip, how plans were progressing for the next production of the local theatre troupe. But I found myself wondering about that look well after Mel had left and I’d gotten to work in my office.
Was Mel planning something? Was Rhia? Did Mel know or just suspect that Rhia had a plan of some sort?
It wasn’t a very productive day for me.
