What's next?
Chapter 10
Mark was already seated in his usual spot near the back of the lecture hall, his notebook open, trying to focus on the professorâs droning voice. He hadnât slept well, his thoughts kept drifting.
Just as the professor launched into a detailed explanation of macroeconomic theory, the classroom door creaked open. Ron, his usual grin plastered on his face, scanned the room for an empty seat. Catching Markâs eye, he sauntered over, his backpack slung over one shoulder.
âMind if I crash here?â
âLeast you could do is be on time,â Mark grumbled scooting over.
âTraffic,â Ron explained with a shrug. âYou know how it is.â
âYeah, sure,â Mark said, rolling his eyes. Ronâs definition of âtrafficâ usually involved hitting the snooze button one too many times.
They settled in. Or at least Ron did, flipping open his notebook and grabbing a pen, his expression intent as he pretended to follow the lecture. Markâs attention, though, kept snagging on every rustle of paper, every cough, every ⌠well, pretty much everything except the professorâs droning voice.
âSo,â Ron whispered, nudging Mark with his elbow, âRia, huh? Didnât see that coming.â
âWhat? How did youâŚ?â
âDude, you two are like⌠the talk of the campus. Everyoneâs buzzing about it.â
âSeriously? Itâs not even that big of a deal.â
âOh, itâs a big deal,â Ron insisted. âYou scored a date with Ria, the most untouchable girl in campus.â
âItâs not like that.â
âSure, sure,â Ron said, chuckling. âWhatever you say, Romeo. But seriously, sheâs amazing. Youâre a lucky guy.â
âYouâre a regular gossip columnist, arenât you?â
âHey, itâs a talent,â he says, patting Mark on the back. âBut Iâm serious, you two seem great together. People have been asking me about you guys constantly.â
âGreat,â Mark muttered, sinking lower in his seat. âJust what I need. More attention.â
âHey, a little fame never hurt anyone. Besides, you deserve it. Youâve been flying solo for too long. Time to enjoy the perks of a high-profile relationship.â
âIâm not sure Ria sees it that way.â
âGive her time,â Ron winked. âSheâll come around.â
Mark chuckled, shaking his head.
They settled into an easy chat, half-tuning out the lecture, their conversation drifting to upcoming exams and the latest basketball game.
Soon, the class wrapped up.
âHey, you up for hitting The Gutter tonight?â Ron asked, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. âCouple of rounds, some wings, the usual?â
The Gutter was their go-to spot, a rundown bowling alley on the outskirts of town, known for its cheap beer and questionable hygiene.
âSorry, man. Iâve got plans.â
âOh, right,â Ron said, a knowing smirk spreading across his face. âPriorities, priorities. Friends become second-class citizens once youâre in a relationship.â
âDonât be a drama queen. Weâll hit The Gutter next week, I promise. And the first roundâs on me.â
âMake it a pitcher, Romeo,â Ron called over his shoulder. âAnd tell Ria I said hi.â
Mark shook his head, chuckling as he slung his backpack over his shoulder and followed Ron out of the classroom.
âMark, could you hold on a second?â Professor Jackson called out.
âCatch you later, man,â Ron said, clapping Mark on the shoulder with a knowing grin.
Mark approached the professorâs desk, a sense of apprehension creeping in. âWhat is it, Professor?â
âHowâs that paper coming along?â
Markâs mind went blank. The paper. Shit. Heâd completely forgotten about it.
âUh, yeah,â he stammered, trying to sound confident. âItâs going well. Iâve done some preliminary research, gathered some sources, and I have a rough outline.â
âGood,â Jackson said, nodding. âJust remember, deadline is in two weeks, and it accounts for a significant portion of your final grade.â
âGot it,â he replied, offering a weak smile.
He practically fled the classroom, feeling overwhelmed with everything thatâs been going on in his life lately.
Mark arrived at the park early, anticipation battling with a fresh wave of anxiety as he thought about Professor Jackson, about that damn paper. He scanned the areaâ empty benches, kids squealing on the playground, a group of dogs chasing a frisbee in the distanceâ all normal, comforting sights that did little to ease the knot in his chest.
No sign of Ria yet.
He pulled out his notebook, hoping to at least make some progress on his research. Heâd been so caught up in the weird ass drama of ⌠everything that heâd almost forgotten about the normal anxieties of college, deadlines, and grades. His phone buzzedâ a text from Ron, something about a party on Fridayâ but he didnât even bother to open it. What was the point, whenâ
âHey.â
He looked up. Ria stood there, her cheek flushed, a sheepish grin on her lips.
She gave him a quick hug, her body warm, solid. âSorry, Iâm late.â
âNo worries,â he replied closing his book. âJust trying to get some work done.â
âWork?â
âYah,â He said, closing his notebook. âthis paper for Professor Jacksonâs Econometrics class is a real pain. Regression analysis, statistical modeling⌠itâs making my head spin.â
âEconometrics?â She wrinkled her nose. âYou sound awful. Youâd think someone majoring in economics would be a little more excited about numbers.â
âHey, Iâm all about marketing and strategy. Data analysis is not my domain.â
âCan we please not talk about studying?â
âYouâre right,â he smiled, stuffing his book back in bag. âSo, how was your day?â
âGood, I guess. Just⌠exhausting.â
âRough day?â
âYou could say that,â she admitted. âWe had this huge presentation, and letâs just say it didnât go as smoothly as planned. My partner totally froze up. It was a mess.â
âTell me about it,â Mark chuckled, his own paper suddenly looming. âPublic speaking is not my forte either.â
âMaybe we should practice together sometime. We can give each other pep talks and pretend to be each other audience.â
âThatâs an idea I can get behind. Though Iâm not sure even you can handle my awkwardness when presenting.â
âDonât worry,â she teased, giving him a playful nudge. âIâll coach you.â
âIâll hold you to that,â Mark said, his smile widening. âSo, tell me more about this presentation. What went wrong?â
âNope, Didnât I say? No more talk about studying.â
âAlright, alright,â he conceded. âWhat do you want to talk about then?â
âI have an idea.â
âWhat is it?â
âLetâs go for a walk.â She gestured toward a wooded path leading to the lake, a popular spot for students looking for quiet study areasâor more private moments, given the couples heâd seen vanish into those trees. Without waiting for a response, she headed down the path, and he found himself following.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves overhead, dappling the wooded path in a mix of light and shadow. The air was filled with birdsong and the familiar scent of pine needles and damp earth.
Riaâs arm slipped through his, and he looked down at her, struck by how perfectly she fit against his side. Her head brushed his shoulder. It felt⌠right. He tightened his grip on her hand, pulling her a little closer.
âSo,â she asked, her voice soft, âhow was your day?â
Mark filled her in on the mundane details of his classes, the endless lectures and assignments that filled his days. Then he told her about his conversation with Ron, about how they were apparently the hottest gossip on campus.
âHeâs such a drama queen,â he finished chuckling.
âWell, heâs not⌠wrong. Word travels fast. My friends have been asking about you, too.â
âOh? What did you tell them?â
âThat IâmâŚ. kind of in the middle of being taken.â
He grinned. âI like the sound of that.â
Ria giggled. âI bet you do.â
They walked in silence for a while, the path winding alongside the lake, sunlight glinting off the rippling surface of the water. The peace he usually found out here ⌠it was gone, replaced by something more complex. Heâd never felt so ⌠content just being near someone.
It was a feeling he didnât want to let go of.
Itâs amazing how much things can change in a few weeks, he thought, a wave of disbelief washing over him.
Is this even real?
The thought gnawed at him, persistent as the ache in his shoulder. Lidaâs wordsâ The bond can cloud your judgment âechoed through his mind. Was he falling for Ria, truly falling? Or was this just⌠destiny, orchestrating emotions he hadnât earned?
They reached a clearing, a small pond nestled between the trees. White water lilies floated on the glassy surface. A dragonfly, wings iridescent in the sunlight, hovered above them, then darted away. He glanced at Riaâ her face upturned, those usually sharp features softened by a childlike wonder.
âLetâs sit,â he suggested, gesturing towards a cluster of rocks near the waterâs edge.
They settled onto the cool stone. Her head rested on his shoulder, a familiar weight that brought a sense of calm he hadnât realized heâd been craving. But that damn doubtâ Itâs an illusion â lingered, persistent as the memory of those crimson tears in his dream.
He loved spending time with Ria. She made him laugh, challenged him, and saw him in a way that no one else ever had. The physical attraction was undeniable, their chemistry off the charts.
But was it genuine? Or was it all just a product of a cosmic puppet show orchestrated by fate?
He wanted to believe it was real, that his feelings for her were genuine and untainted. But doubt lingered, casting a shadow over their budding relationship.
He thought of that day in her bedroom, of the library, of the way her scent had hijacked his senses before heâd even known her name. Heâd been so focused on understanding their connection, on apologizing for his behavior⌠but he never stopped questioning his own feelings.
And then, somehow, things had shifted. They just clicked, conversations flowing effortlessly, laughter filling empty classrooms and quiet cafes. They bonded over cheesy action movies and a shared dislike for cilantro. He found himself looking forward for their dates, craving her company, her warm smile, and the spark in her eyes.
It was hard not to like Riaâsmart, funny, beautiful, with a touch of mischief that kept him on his toes.
But that nagging doubt persisted, whispering in the back of his mind: Is this real?
âMark? Whatâs wrong?â
Riaâs voice broke through his thoughts.
âNothing,â he mumbled, trying to sound casual.
She lifted her head, her gaze searching his. âYou seem stressed. Somethingâs bothering you.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âYouâre doing that⌠stressed out thing.â
âI am doing what now???â
âYou breathe faster when youâre stressed,â she explained, her voice soft. âAnd your voice⌠it gets this tight, clipped tone.â
âIâm not breathing faster.â
She placed her hand on his chest. âYes, you are,â she said, with a playful smile. âAnd your heartâs racing.â
He wanted to deny it, to deflect with a joke, with that easy charm he usually relied on. But something in her gaze, in the genuine concern he saw thereâŚ
âOkay, maybe a little.â
âWhatâs bothering you?â Ria asked softly. âYou can talk to me, Mark. You know that, right?â
He sighed, the weight of it allâ this bond, his parents, that goddamn paper, Riaâs scent lingering even nowâ threatening to crush him. He knew he couldnât keep bottling things up, especially not with Ria. She deserves better. She deserves my honesty, he admitted to himself, even if it meant laying out the messy, confusing tangle of thoughts and emotions churning inside him.
âItâs just⌠this whole bond thing,â he said, his voice barely a whisper. âItâs messing with my head. I donât know whatâs real anymore. I donât know if ⌠if what I feel is ⌠me or justââ He stumbled, searching for words to describe this cosmic puppet show he felt trapped in.
His eyes met hers. âI like you, Ria. A lot. But what if itâs all just an illusion? What if it fades away?â
Ria didnât answer right away. Her hand remained on his chest, the warmth of her touch a comforting counterpoint to the turmoil within him. The silence lingered, broken only by the soft sound of water against the rocks.
âI understand,â she finally said, her voice soft. âItâs a lot to take in. To be honestâŚâ she hesitated, a flicker of vulnerability crossing her features, âI have those same doubts, you know.â
âYou do?â
âItâsâŚ. intense. Overwhelming at times. Itâs hard to separate whatâs real⌠and whatâs just thisâŚâ Her voice trailed off. âThis⌠pull.â
âBut⌠you seem so sure,â he said, confusion in his voice. âAbout us⌠About⌠this.â
âI want to be sure. I want to believe in it. But itâs scary, you know? To think that my feelings, my choices, could be influenced by something beyond my control.â
âYeah,â he whispered. âLike giving up⌠a part of yourself.â
âExactly.â She sighed. âBut maybe thatâs what this is about, Mark. Trusting⌠each other? Trusting that this connection⌠itâs leading us somewhere good.â
He shook his head. âIâve always been ⌠in control of my choices. This⌠it feels different. Like Iâm being swept along by some current I canât fight.â
âI get it. But maybe letting go isnât always a bad thing. Maybe itâs about surrendering to something bigger than ourselves, something that can lead us to a place we could never reach on our own.â
âI donât know how you do it,â he said. âYou always seem ⌠so sure of yourself, so confident.â
She chuckled. âTrust me, thatâs far from true. I have my doubts. My anxieties⌠insecurities. Plenty of them.â
âButââ
âSometimesâŚâ she cut him off, her voice soft but firm. âYou just have to trust your instincts. Even when it feels like youâre about to walk off a cliff. I have learned that a long time ago.â
âThatâs easy to say when you grew up in this world. But for me, it feels like this crazy curve ball.â
âMaybe⌠But itâs worth a shot, donât you think?â
âYeah, I ⌠I wouldnât be here if I didnât.â He still couldnât shut off his brainâ those questions, those fears, whispering constantly in the backgroundâbut he was trying. He was here. âItâs just⌠hard.â
âI know,â Ria said, her gaze understanding. âSometimes I feel the same way. Itâs like thereâs this voice in my head, whispering⌠what if this is all wrong? What if weâre notâŚ. What if we justââ
â⌠screw it all up?â Mark finished, a wry smile twisting his lips.
Ria laughed, the sound light and airy. âExactly.â
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of those shared anxieties lingering in the air.
âItâs weird, isnât it?â Mark said, shaking his head. âThis whole soulmate thing. Like, itâs 21st century, and weâre supposed to believe in destiny and predetermined love?â
âWell,â she countered, a thoughtful expression on her face, âpeople still have arranged marriages. And those seem to work out sometimes.â
âYeah, but thatâs different,â He couldnât quite articulate whyâ but it felt different. âThatâs about families, tradition, cultural expectations. ThisâŚâ He gestured between them, at the invisible thread that Lida claimed bound them together. âThis is about ⌠mystical energy connecting us toââ
âMaybe itâs not that different,â she said. âThink about it. Arranged marriages are based on the idea that two people can learn to love each other, right? Maybe this works the same way. It brings us togetherâ two souls who are ⌠meant to be intertwinedâ and then itâs up to us to figure out the rest. Think of it just a more⌠intense version of that.â Ria tilted her head, that mischievous spark back in her eyes. âLike a ⌠cosmic matchmaking service, I guess.â
âA cosmic what?â He laughed, amused. âThat sounds even weirder.â
âNot the best analogy?â
âPretty terrible, actually.â He shook his head, but couldnât suppress his grin. âBut I get what you mean.â
âOkay, good. Becauseââ
âBut what if weâre not compatible? What if weâre not⌠meant to be?â
âThen we walk away.â Her voice was calm, steady. âIt might bring us together but the bond doesnât control us, Mark. We still have a choice. We can embrace it, or ⌠well.. we can just walk away.â
âBut my auntâŚâ he hesitated, uncertainty creeping back into his voice. âShe said that breaking a bond⌠it can be dangerous. For both people involved.â
Ria sighed, looking at the rippling pond. âMark, I donât know what you want me to say,â she said, a hint of frustration in her voice. âI donât have all the answers. Despite what you think this whole thing⌠itâs new for me, too.â
Silence returned, heavy and uncertain. Mark stared at his hands, his thoughts a jumbled mess. It felt like standing on the edge of that cliff sheâd mentioned earlier.
Was there a right answer here? A way to navigate forward without getting lost in the storm of doubts and fears?
He turned to look at Ria, her profile illuminated by the soft golden light. He remembered Lidaâs words: Sheâs going through the same thing you are, Mark. Donât forget that.
Idiot!
He had been so wrapped up in his own head, in the maelstrom of doubts and what-ifs, that he hadnât even considered ⌠her. He had bombarded her with questions, with anxieties, with his own fears, without even attempting to ease hers.
âYou know,â he began, a nervous laugh escaping his lips, âThereâs one thing about this whole⌠situation thatâs just⌠most absurd.â
Ria drew her knees to her chest, turning to face him, her brow furrowed with curiosity. âWhatâs that?â
âYou know, likeâŚâ He winced internally, unsure how to broach the topic. âHow⌠well, how extreme some things are?â
âExtreme?â she echoed, tilting her head. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know⌠the physical side of things.â He felt like a bumbling idiot. âThe intensity. Itâs like⌠my body just goes haywire. I canât⌠I canât seem to control it.â
âControl what, exactly?â
âYou knowâŚâ he stammered. âThe⌠the⌠after part. Itâs just⌠it goes on forever.â
âWhat are you talking about, Mark?â
âWhen we⌠you knowâŚWhen we had sex. Itâs like⌠we donât stop. For a long time.â
Ria stared at him blankly for a moment, then her eyes widened in understanding. âOh,â she said simply. âYou mean⌠that.â
âYeah, that.â He exhaled slowly. âItâs⌠kinda crazy, right?â
âCrazy?âA smile played at the corners of her lips. âThatâs one way to put it.â
"Itâs justâŚI-Itâs not exactly⌠normal, is it?â
She shrugged. âWhatâs normal anyway?â
âI donât know,â Mark said, throwing his hands up in exasperation. âBut Iâm pretty sure most couples donâtâŚâ He trailed off, unable to find the words to describe the sheer physicality of itâ the intensity, the way his body seemed to respond to hers with a hunger that went beyond any physical need.
âDonât what?â She prompted, a playful glint in her eye.
âDonâtâŚ. get tangled up like that, for so long.â
âOh.â She laughed, the sound soft but knowing. âThatâs the bond, Mark. Itâs supposed to be ⌠intense. Overwhelming. Itâs how it works.â
âSeriously? It doesnât freak you out? Itâs like⌠I donât knowâŚ.â He searched for a comparison that wouldnât make him sound like a hormone-crazed teenager. âItâs like my body has a mind of its own. A fire hoseâŚâ
âA fire hose?â Her lips twitched in amusement. âYou didnât seem to mind too much when you were buried inside me. flooding myâŚâ She paused, those gold-flecked eyes glinting with a mischief that sent a jolt straight to his groin. âInsides.â
âSee, thatâs what I mean! You say things like that so casually.â He gestured vaguely, flustered. âItâs like it doesnât even faze you.â
Ria simply shrugged, a playful smile dancing on her lips.
âDo you even knowâŚ..If it happens every time.â
âNo,â she said, shaking her head. âIt doesnât. As far as I know, itâs something we can control. Or rather, something you can control.â
Mark scooted closer. âHmm, so I get to decide, huh?â he murmured. âWhen I get to fill you up?â
âPretty much,â she replied, her cheeks flushing slightly despite her earlier nonchalance.
He gently traced the line of her jaw with his finger. âGood to know.â
âWhat are you thinking?â She breathed.
âOh, just⌠ideas.â
âIdeas?â
âYeah,â he said, leaning closer, his breath warm on her cheek. âIdeas about all the ways we can⌠explore this connection of ours.â
âI thought you werenât sure about all of this,â she teased.
âYeah, wellâŚâ He started to explain, to apologizeâ but then he saw herâ lips parted, cheeks flushed, those eyes âand all coherent thought vanished- Damn, sheâs beautiful âI guess some things are just⌠irresistible.â
She laughed, light and carefree. âRight.â
Mark shrugged, unable to deny the truth. He was drawn to her, pulled in by a force that was both exhilarating and terrifying. He still had doubts, still questioned the nature of their bond, but one thing was certain: he couldnât resist her.
âYou know,â Ria said, her voice softer now, âitâs okay to be scared, Mark. This is new for both of us. We donât have to have all the answers right now. We can just⌠see where it goes.â
âThatâs what scares me,â he admitted. âWhere it goes. What it means. What if Iâm not ready for this?â
âMaybe youâre more ready than you think,â Ria said, brushing his cheek. âMaybe we both are. But we wonât know unless we try.â
He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes for a moment, savoring the warmth of her hand against his skin.
âHow did you even notice that about my breathing? I didnât even realize I was doing it.â
âIâm observant,â she shrugged. âI notice things. Little details. Itâs kind of my thing.â
âLike a superpower?â Mark teased, his fingers still tracing the delicate curve of her cheekbone.
âSomething like that,â Ria said, leaning in. âSo, tell me,â she continued, her voice softening, âHave you noticed anything⌠about me?â
Mark pondered for a moment. âYou blink faster when youâre thinking.â
âReally?â
âYeah, like when youâre trying to solve a problem, or when youâre really focused on something⌠like you were when you were healing my shoulder.â
He demonstrated, fluttering his eyelashes rapidly. âSee? Just like this.â
Ria laughed, warm and genuine, erasing the last traces of tension. âYouâre ridiculous,â she said, shaking her head.
Mark shrugged, grinning, and continued to trace her face with his fingertip, relishing the softness of her skin.
âYou gonna keep doing that?â
âDo you want me to stop?â Mark paused, his fingertip tracing the delicate curve of her lower lip.
Ria hesitatedâ just a heartbeatâ then shook her head, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks. Emboldened, he leaned closer, his fingertip tracing the fullness of her lower lipâ plump, slightly parted, so damn invitingâŚ
âYour lips are so soft.â
âI know.â
âTheyâre very pretty, too.â
âI know,â she repeated, delight dancing in her eyes.
âAnd theyâre very tasty.â
Her grin was pure mischief. She parted her lips slightly, her gaze never wavering as she opened her mouth wider, a silent invitation.
His breath hitched as she took his finger into her mouth, warmth and pressure encasing him. He felt the gentle graze of her teeth against his skin. Her mouth was hot and wet.
Her tongueâ surprisingly strong, teasingâswirled around his finger, exploring, and he watched, hypnotized as she sucked gently, her cheeks hollowed, her eyes never leaving his. And thenâ she bit down.
âOw!â He yelped, jerking his hand back. âWhat was that for?â
âJust making sure youâre paying attention,â she replied mischievously.
âSeriously?â he rubbed his fingertip. âRia, that hurt.â
âAre you complaining about a little bite?â She scoffed, but her smile betrayed her. âYouâre such a baby.â
âI am not!â He retorted, feigning offense. âThat was a serious bite. You have sharp teeth, you know.â
âDonât be so dramatic. Itâs barely a scratch.â
âEasy for you to say,â he grumbled. âYouâre not the one who just got attacked by a vampire.â
Ria laughed. âOkay, okay, Iâm sorry,â she said, leaning in. She took his fingertip into her mouth, her lips brushing his skin in a soft, lingering kiss. âFeel better?â
âMaybe⌠aâŚ. little.â
She kissed it againâ a tease, her touch lingering a moment longer. âNow?â
âHmmmâŚâ He hummed, pretending to consider. âStill kinda sore. Needs more ⌠attention.â
Ria leaned in, her eyes sparkling. But just as her lips were about to brush his skin again, he pulled his hand away. âNah, not there.â
âWhat?â She frowned, that adorable confusion making him grin.
He pointed to his lips. âHere. This is whatâs hurting now.â
âHow can your lips be hurting?â
âReferred pain, obviously,â his tone serious. âLike when people have heart attacks, but it hurts in their arm, you know? Nerves.â
âYouâre making that up,â Ria said, her laughter bubbling up like a spring.
âI am not,â he insisted. âThe nervesâŚ.Itâs all connected. My finger hurts, so my lips hurt. Itâs science.â
âYouâre totally making that up,â she said, her laughter fading. âReferred pain from your finger to your lips? Seriously?â
He grinned, relishing her amusementâ âThe agony is unbearable. I might not recover.â He paused, his gaze locking with hers. âUnless⌠a beautiful girl takes pity on me. Offers a healing kiss?â
âNice try, cowboy.â She shook her head, but a smile slipped through. âBut Iâm not falling for that trick.â
âItâs not a trick. My lips are genuinely in pain, Ria! Look it upâ sympathetic resonance!!!â
âIâm pretty sure sympathetic resonance doesnât involve making out.â
âMaybe you havenât read the latest research. Itâs groundbreaking stuff. Kissing has been certified as a cure.â
âKissing as a cure? Seriously?â She gave him that âyouâre an idiotâ look.
âItâs a legitimate field of study. Kissing releases endorphins reduces stress, boosts the immune system⌠Itâs practically a miracle drug.â
âYouâre full of it,â she said, shaking her head, but a smile tugged at her lips.
âOnly one way to find out.â He raised an eyebrow, challenging her. âReady for a⌠clinical trial?â
Her smileâ slow, knowingâ was answer enough.
She leaned in. It wasnât the desperate clash of their first kiss, not the overwhelming hunger that had consumed them in her bedroom, but something more⌠gentle.
He deepened the kiss, his tongue tracing the seam of her lips, and she parted themâ granting him access, and their tongues met in a slow, sensual dance.
She melted against him, her warmth a welcome contrast to the lingering cold of her magic. He could feel the curves of her body pressed against his, her heart beating a frantic rhythm against his chest.
His hands roamed, exploringâ the delicate arch of her spine, the dip of her waistâ needing to feel her, to anchor himself in the reality of this connection that was both exhilarating and utterly terrifying.
âMmm,â she moaned softly, tilting her head back, offering him complete access.
Mark pushed, his tongue plunging deeper, exploring the velvety warmth of her mouth with a possessive hunger. He traced her teeth, the ridges of her palate, and the silken curve of her tongue. She tasted of mint and sunshine and something uniquely hers, the warmth of her mouth spreading through him like a shot of pure magic.
He felt the heat radiating from her, the soft curves pressing against his chest, the gentle swell of her breasts teasing his senses. He was drowning in her, intoxicated by her taste, her scent, and the way she surrendered to his touch with an abandon that both thrilled and terrified him.
His fingers tangled in her hair, pulling her closer. Her nails lightly scratched his scalp as their bodies moved together, a slow dance quickly turning into a tangle of limbs and desperate breaths. His world narrowedâher taste, her scent, the heat radiating from her skinâall that mattered.
They kissed for what felt like an eternity, lost in the intoxicating whirlwind of their desires. The world around them faded, the only reality was the heat of their bodies, the taste of their mouths, the urgent rhythm of their mingled breaths.
Then, just as the intensity reached a fever pitch, Mark pulled back slightly, his teeth grazing her lower lip. He nipped at it playfully, tugging gently until it slipped from between his teeth with a soft pop.
âOw!â Ria exclaimed, her hand flying to her mouth. A tiny bead of blood welled up on her lip, staining the perfect pink a deeper crimson.
âWhat was that for?â
He grinned. âJust testing the merchandise.â
Ria narrowed her eyes, her fingertip tracing the drop of blood on her lip. âThereâs blood,â she accused, her voice a mock pout.
âSeriously? Youâre whining about a drop of blood? Such a baby.â
âYouâre so childish. I barely grazed your finger.â
âAh, but revenge is sweet,â he countered, his grin widening. âJust like your lips.â
Ria swatted his arm. âSmooth talker,â she said, rolling her eyes. âYouâre lucky youâre cute.â
âCute? Iâll have you know Iâm devastatingly handsome.â
âDevastatingly full of yourself, maybe.â
âHey, a guyâs gotta have confidence.â
âConfidence is good,â Ria conceded, her smile softening. âArrogance, not so much.â
âSo, where do I fall on the spectrum?â
âHmm, the juryâs still out on that one. I guess Iâll have to keep observing you.â
âBy all means,â Mark said, leaning closer, his gaze meeting hers. âObserve away.â
âSuch a show-off,â she said, rolling her eyes. Then her expression changed. âOw,â she muttered, touching her lower lip. âThat actually hurts.â
âHey, you started it.â
âTrue,â she said, her lips curving into a wicked grin. âWhich means I get to finish it.â
She lunged for his hand, her teeth bared.
âHey, no fair!â He pulled his hand back, laughing as she scampered onto his lap. Damn, she was fast. And he definitely liked the view.
âThis is not over, cowboy.â
âGet off me, you wildcat!â He twisted, trying to dodge, his laughter echoing through the quiet woods as she nuzzled his neck, her breath tickling his skin.
âNot until Iâve tasted your blood!â
She continued her playful assault, nipping at his cheeks and his ears, even attempting a playful chomp on his nose. It was delicious tortureâ her laughter, the way her body moved against his, the scent of her hair filling his senses.
âOkay, okay, I surrender!â He gasped for breath, laughing so hard his sides ached. âMercy!â
âAdmit defeat.â Ria, perched triumphantly on his lap, grinned down at him, her eyes sparkling.
âFine, fine, you win,â He raised his hands in mock surrender.
âThatâs better,â She leaned down, her forehead resting against his. She rubbed her nose against his playfully. âYou know, youâre surprisingly⌠cuddly.â
âAnd youâre surprisingly ferocious.â
âOnly when provoked.â
âDuly noted,â He idly twirled a strand of her hair around his finger, lost in the simple pleasure of her presence.

âHmmâŚâ She thought for a moment. âThereâs this amazing Italian place downtown. They have the best pasta.â
âSounds perfect. How about tomorrow night?â

He shrugged. âI just⌠I want to take you out. A proper date. Just you and me.â
âOkay,â Ria said, her smile widening. âI like the sound of that.â
