What's next?
Chase!
As soon as the saloon doors swung shut behind her, I snapped into action, the lazy haze of exhaustion replaced by a ****, driving need. My mind screamed at me to move, and I obeyed without hesitation. My pants were crumpled in a heap on the floor, so I kicked them along in front of me as I scrambled toward the doors, hopping awkwardly on one foot as I tried to shove my leg into them.
By the time I reached the doors, I had one leg in and the other dragging uselessly behind. I ducked my head out, ignoring the way the saloon doors swung back and slapped me on the shoulder. My eyes darted up and down the street, scanning the bustling crowd for a flash of orange hair or the sway of a confident, thief’s stride. There! There she was! Nami, moving like she owned the world, the dresses draped over her arm and my earrings jingling in her pocket with every step.
I yanked the pants the rest of the way up, fumbling with the buttons as I bolted back inside. My boots were by the counter, and I snatched them up, jamming my feet into them without bothering to untie the laces. There was no time for perfection. Shirtless, disheveled, and frantic, I burst back through the doors and into the crowded street.
Nami wasn’t far ahead, her bright hair bobbing like a beacon in the chaos of the marketplace. My heart pounded as I pushed through the crowd, my mind racing with the stakes of this moment. I had no plan, no clever scheme to steal the earrings back, but none of that mattered. All that mattered was closing the distance.
You can’t let her get away, I told myself, my bare chest heaving as I pushed past a startled vendor. Make a scene if you have to, but get those earrings!
My boots thudded against the dirt road as I surged forward, weaving through clusters of people with a singular focus.
Nami was cutting through the crowd, her pace quick and deliberate as though she could feel me breathing down her neck. Her bright orange hair stood out like a beacon, but she was moving fast, clearly intent on making as much distance as possible.
I ducked into the flow of people, weaving through bodies as I tried to close the gap without drawing her attention. My eyes stayed glued to her figure, watching for any sign she might glance back. Keep moving, just don’t look-
She stopped suddenly, her sharp eyes scanning the crowd like a predator sniffing for danger. I froze mid-step, ducking low behind a trio of merchants arguing over the price of some exotic spices. My heart pounded in my ears, sweat beading at the nape of my neck. Shit, did she see me?
After a tense moment, she turned back around, her pace picking up as she weaved deeper into the marketplace. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding and pressed forward, sticking close to a group of noisy tourists. The cover of their excited chatter masked the sound of my boots on the cobblestones, but my attention never wavered from her.
I couldn’t afford to lose her. Not now. If I could just get close enough, just one moment of distraction, one chance to grab the earrings, I could vanish into the crowd and turn this entire mess around. My mind raced with possibilities as I trailed her, every step a gamble. Come on, Tsujo. You’ve gotten out of worse than this.
The crowd thickened around me, swallowing me whole like a stormy sea. My eyes darted frantically, searching for any glimpse of her orange hair. People jostled me from all sides, their chatter a deafening hum that drowned out every other sound. Where is she?!
My chest tightened as panic clawed its way up my throat. No, no, no! I can’t lose her! Not now! I turned in place, craning my neck over the heads of taller people, but there was no sign of her. Sweat dripped down my temple, the midday sun bearing down as I scanned every corner of the marketplace. Then, through the chaos, I caught it: a fleeting flash of red hair disappearing down a side street.
My heart leapt, and I lunged forward, only to slam into the back of a slow-moving group blocking the way. “Move!” I barked, but they were too caught up in their own conversation to notice me. The longer I stood there, the further away she got. Desperation kicked in.
I dropped low, scrambling between a massive man’s legs as he shouted something indignant above me. I didn’t care, I was already up and sprinting for the side street, dodging a merchant who cursed as I knocked over his crate of fruit. My boots pounded against the cobblestones as I bolted down the narrow passage, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
But when I got there… nothing. No Nami. Just the empty street stretching ahead, shadowed by tall, uneven buildings. My heart sank, but I pressed on, refusing to give up. The street ended in a T-intersection, the path splitting sharply to the right and left.
I froze, my pulse thundering in my ears as I stared at the fork in the road. My chest heaved as I tried to catch my breath, my mind racing. Which way? Every second wasted made my gut twist tighter. Right or left?
I swallowed hard, the weight of the decision bearing down on me. This wasn’t just about her, it was about everything. My future. My power. The earrings. I clenched my fists, steeling myself for the choice. Then, without another thought, I made my move.
Right or Left?
Normality
Don't mind the fucking, nothing to see here
Once upon a time, on a bet and while very very drunk, a higher power of some kind made a very special item.
