Chapter 14 by gargomax gargomax

What's next?

Ariel

You find a large room, bloodstained but unoccupied, and you make a quick prayer.

<<Light God Ariel!>> you pray. <<Green of hair! Girlish of body! I need guidance!>>

It's over a minute before you get a reply. I'm a little busy right now, his voice speaks in your mind. Getting a new army together. Can it wait?

<<It cannot wait!>> you pray. <<We need a long conversation, my guardian angel! Right now!>>

You're starting to dislike the Light God, but there are things you need from him, and now seems like a good time.

He manifests a few seconds later. A beam of glorious sunlight shines down from the ceiling of the cavern, and he descends on feathered wings. "Did you call me girlish?" he asks. "I'm not girlish at all! I mean, not that it would be bad if I were girlish. But I'm not! That's very rude!"

Heh. "What? No! I must have misspoken!" you reassure him. "You're not girlish at all! Very masculine, in fact."

He accepts the flattery unquestionably. "Glad to hear it! What can I do for you, then? I'm a bit new at being a guardian angel, but since you did choose that power, I'll do my best at it!"

"It's about your Hero," you say. "Citrinas. I've heard she might attack us soon."

"Hah! Yeah, I think she will!" Ariel agrees cheerfully. "She got distracted, tearing a dungeon apart and putting it together again. Trying to figure out how it works. Quite the scientist, she is! But, yeah. If I were you, I'd just convert to the Light right now. Swear some oaths of obedience, and I'll, uh, tell her not to kill you!"

"And... would that work?" you ask. "Just checking here. If you tell her not to kill me, would she actually not kill me?"

Ariel's smile wavers. "Um. Maybe. She and I... don't get along perfectly. We had a misunderstanding over a couple of minor fibs. She really, really doesn't like liars. And I can't really **** her to do things, you understand. Only -- well, guide. And protect."

"But you're my guardian angel, right?" you continue. "If she attacked me, you'd have to protect me, right?"

Ariel nods cheerfully. "Oh yes! Nothing can possibly hurt you while I'm defending you! For up to ten minutes per day! That's the rule!"

"So that's how it is?" you ask, unable to quite keep the edge out of your voice. "I was hoping to get a little more for those oaths I swore..."

"The Light always wins!" Ariel tells you.

You switch tactics. "I'm -- I'm very distraught about this, Ariel. Distraught and upset. Could I -- could I have a hug?"

"Hugs are for everyone!" the Light God agrees. "Mostly for girls! But for everyone! Even Dark monsters!" He swoops down and wraps his wings around you.

You form some tentacles and hug him back. "There's another matter," you say. "I have -- a friend, who's having some problems recently. He's a boy, but he's been wondering what it would be like to be a girl."

Ariel twitches slightly in your grasp. "Well, there's nothing wrong with -- wondering! Anyone can wonder, after all, haha! It's not a sin! You should tell him that's perfectly fine. Even if it's not for me, personally. I like girls way too much to -- wonder..." He's starting to blush.

"Well, that's the thing," you say, digging your tentacles a bit more firmly into his wings. "My friend -- he can't actually change form. So he was wondering if I knew anyone who could change form, and who could try it for him. Not out of wanting to, you know. Just as a favor. For my friend."

Ariel's whole body goes tense, and his blush is beet red now. "Haha, um, um," he says. "Although it's true that, um, I could change my form like that, I simply wouldn't! Couldn't! Because, um --"

"It's not a problem," you reassure him, gripping his feathers hard. "If you're afraid to do the experiment, I'll just tell my friend that. He'll be disappointed, of course. He has a lot of respect for you, and he was just saying how courageous he thinks you are, so I'm sure he'll be surprised that you're afraid to try being a girl. But --"

Ariel jerks out of your grasp in a panic. "I have to go now!" he says. "I just thought of something very very urgent I have to do somewhere else sorry BYE!"

And he vanishes in a burst of light.

He leaves, in your grasp, five different glowing angel feathers, ripped out from his wings when he tore away.

You call up your records:

These are the Angel Blessings I can give you, and unlike those filthy Monster Powers, there's no way to obtain them in Ruyanei...
Okay, there are. But I'm not dumb enough to tell you how.

Angelic Protection: This one's done by fusing one of my feathers into your heart, er, core...

And you smile.
