Of the three wives, Julia was having the most success. Of course, she was also spending her time in the taverns, where the beer flowed and the morality was left at the door.
Take these two blonde wenches, Julia thought, watching them both knockback a mug. They came here every night, took back white boys every night, and discarded them like cans of the beer they had before they got to the tavern. They had hard exteriors, until it got late and they had those fleeting moments of vulnerability before they captured their prey for the late morning hours.
"Just once," the dirty blonde, Heidi, whispered drunkenly into Julia's ear, who had done a lot of listening and observing and very little talking. "I'd like to take home a man worth his salt."
"Well," Julia said, smiling lopsidedly. "If you still feel that way tomorrow, come and find me."
