Finally, she looked into her mother's eyes and asked for her help in securing the delegates' votes for the upcoming election.
"Uncle was helping to secure the votes from the delegates, but I did not have the money to pay for the bribes at the time. It was a sizeable amount, mother, and I fear they are angered at the perceived slight. Can you help me with them?" Her eyes teared up, her vulneriability laid bare before her mother.
Her mother nodded, stroking her back in reassurance. "I will, darling, I will. You have my word."
Isabella hugged her again, her heart feeling a little lighter, a little less alone.
