Finally, she looked into her mother's eyes and asked for her help in reconciling with the army.
"General Serrano had threatened to overthrow me if I fail to uphold my father's legacy, and has stopped listening to my commands. He... took me the last time I saw him. He did not show at the funeral, nor the meeting just now. Please mother, if you can, can you help convince him to see me?" Despite herself Isabella felt her eyes blur with tears.
Her mother nodded, stroking her back in reassurance. "I will, darling, I will. You have my word."
Isabella hugged her again, her heart feeling a little lighter, a little less alone.
