The next day Moses took them out again. This time to that apartment complex.
"So what's here?" Elizabeth asked.
"A choice," Moses said. "You've learned Black culture. You've done better than I expected. But this is the opportunity to truly embrace it. There is a vacancy here. A spot too small for four kids, but you'd learn to manage. A spot where the school is all Black. A spot where you'd be not Elizabeth Lancaster ... not Elizabeth Jones. But Elizabeth Castle. A struggling single mother who not just dabbles in the Black experience. But who actively lives it, in every facet. Who serves many men. Who doesn't get the benefit of a ring on her finger or child support. Or, we can go back to the mansion and live out the good life, and you can always wonder what could have been."
Elizabeth swallowed, hard.
